BiggerPockets Money: Mindy, Me, And More Dinosaurs!

January 3, 2022 by Mr. 1500 Days 3 Comments

In case you don’t know, Mindy-wife has her own online presence over at BiggerPockets. Specifically, she co-hosts the BiggerPockets Money podcast with Scott Trench.

Mindy and Scott released their first episode in 2018. Since then, I’ve asked Mindy this question every month week day hour:

In a very whiny and pathetic voice:

When do I get to be on your podcast?

Mindy:

Probably as soon as never!

But now, she has deemed me worthy! That or the scheduled guest and their backup both canceled at the last second and she was desperate. Hmmmm, I wonder if the same logic applies to why she married me?

Oh, never mind that!

In any case, I finally made it on to BiggerPockets Money, and here’s the episode!

You can also listen here or wherever finer podcasts are sold!

A couple of random notes

Dinosaurs! One of my silly goals with this blog and other online appearances was to get my plastic dinosaur toys online. In the thumbnail above and in the actual video, Frugalsaurus and Spendosaurus make an appearance. Yay dinosaurs! You have to get old, but that doesn’t mean you have to grow up!

Spending tracker! On the podcast, we talk about tracking our spending. We have enough money, so you may ask this:

Dude, why are y’all tracking your spending?

-you

Three reasons:

  • Curiousity: We’re conscientious spenders, but we went off the rails in 2021. Home projects led to more eating out and other convenience purchases. I have found that I tend to underestimate spending and I want to know the actual numbers.
  • Efficiency: No matter how much you have of something, you shouldn’t waste it. This goes for time, food, energy, and pretty much everything in life. I like to carry out my days leaving a minimal footprint. Tracking spending will help us be more efficient. Just knowing that I have to love every purchase makes me spend more thoughtfully.
  • Toilet brushes: Mindy has an addiction to toilet brushes, so it will be fun to gently call her out when she fills the cart with them at IKEA. This will surely come back to bite me when she calls me out for infinitely worse purchases including <insert one or more: plastic dinosaurs, a Tesla, another phone, another Tesla>.

Enjoy the episode!

Thought you’d have been the first one on the podcast, what with you sleeping with the co-host and all (I mean Mindy, not Scott). I’m looking forward to hearing this one- we haven’t strictly tracked our spending in the last year, only kept a loose tab on it. Since we bought a new (more expensive, yay us?) house, it’s probably wise to start doing so again. Looking forward to seeing how your kitchen reno goes- we are imminently going to be starting ours. Except pretty sure there’s a centipede nest hiding in the walls. Last time we bug bombed the house, a few crawled out of the sink disposal light switch.

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
