Blogs I Dig

There are so many great blogs out there that this list would have about 10,000 entries if I included them all. I’m going to do something different here. I’ll be adding blogs slowly and writing a companion post.

My other gig? (!)

I’m writing posts over at InvestmentZen. Besides the blog, the site has some nifty information. I think Robo Advisors are a smart idea for most investors and this chart that compares them is pretty great.

Personal Finance

  • Budgets are Sexy/Rockstar Finance: J. Money makes personal finance fun.

Lifestyle

  • Want to meet two sets of people who are kicking ass in life? If I could turn back the clock, I’d model my life something like the Frugalwoods and Penny Planters.
  • Living AFI: This guy is a step ahead of me in that he’s already retired. His posts are epically long, but filled with motivation and smart thoughts. Every post of his reassures me. And believe me, I need reassurance.

Investing

  • Coach Carson is only in his 30s, but already has a mini real-estate empire. Even better, he’s super-smart and a nice guy. I love that I can talk to him about Leonardo da Vinci and financing properties.
  • jlcollinsnh – Mr. Collins is one of my favorite people in the blogosphere (is that even a word?). His excellent series on investing may be the best thing you read about how to invest money. When I have an investing question, Mr. Collins is the guy I reach out to.
  • Kapitalust – One of the keys to success at life is finding smart people and learning from them. I learn something every time I read a Kapitalust post.
  • Mad Fientist – The Fientist isn’t really mad because he comes up with some really brilliant stuff.
  • I’m not a dividend investor, but Dividend Growth Investor is a sharp guy who has expanded my knowledge. Anyone who can teach me something is a valuable friend.
  • Bogleheads and the MMM forums have some of the smartest people in the world just waiting to answer your questions.

Calculators

  • Want to run your own retirement scenarios? Check out FIRE simulator. I love this thing and I’ve spent hours messing with it.

Smart Mofos

  • Poppa’s Cottage – Learn how to live a worthy life, not be an a$$hole and also a bit about biology.

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
