I have some big physical goals for this year. The first one is a half-marathon in Portland on 3/31. To hold myself accountable, I’ll report my progress here every week. For accounting purposes, my week starts on Saturday morning.
If you have goals too, report your progress in the comments!
Update #1 (1/6 – 1/12)
I was laid out this week with a nasty bug. My nose wouldn’t stop running and neither would other parts of my body. Except for my legs. They barely ran at all.
I was tired.
I was delirious (hence this awful post).
I used a lot of toilet paper.
As a result, I have only run on 2 of the past 7 days:
This Week
- Runs: 2
- Miles: 6
- Time spent on the toilet due to the nasty bug:
∞
- Longest run this week: 3 miles
- Beers this week: 6 (All at Camp FI. I stopped drinking after it was over.)
- Beers consumed this year: 12
- Beer consumption increase at FI meetups: 100%
Overall
- Days until half marathon: 78
- Total miles: 33.5
- Weight: 159 (goal is < 150)
Thoughts
I still don’t have a run over 5 miles under my elastic belt. I’m not worried since I still have two and half months to prepare.

For those keeping score at home, here’s how Carl’s competition is doing this week. 😉
This week, I ran seven times for a total of 14.23 miles. That’s 2:16:23 of running time for an average pace of 9:35 per mile. I had zero beers this week (although Carl tried to push some on me in an attempt to sabotage my eventual victory), but I had 9 servings of alcohol. That’s more than I wanted, but less than I would have been drinking even two weeks ago.
Not sure what I weigh right now (because I’m on the road), but I know I’m fatter than Carl. He’s looking trim!
Yikes. This is either totally motivating (“I need to go harder to keep up with JD!”) or the opposite (“Shit, no way I’m catching this rabbit.”).
I get the sense that you’re not eating or drinking enough. Don’t starve those muscles! While you’re in Florida, go visit a Golden Corral or three.
oooh sorry about the nasty bug. Why does it seem when you are just ready to get going on a goal, something already likes to challenge you? My goal to increase freelance work is going great so far!
Yep.
Congrats on the increased freelance work!
Mr 1500days thanks for this blog I have been following for a while now. It’s really helped me in my own journey to financial independence. It prompted me to start my own blog at iwasblacklisted.com thank you
Thanks for the kind comment and welcome to the blogosphere! I hope that you enjoy writing as much as I do!
Sorry to hear about your nasty bug, I hope you lost some weight as a benefit of having it. Hope you’ll get well soon.
I have too many goals to report, but so far I am on track on all of them.

Thanks TFR!
Hey, just a tip from a guy who has run many marathons. Don’t try to lose a lot of weight while training. No matter how you do nuitrition your body destroys muscle tissue and endurance when you are losing weight fast. You will need to eat more than normal going into the last few weeks if you want to be strong in the race. I’d shoot for losing most of the weight either several weeks before the race so you can recover or doing it after the race. I’m no expert but I have had some excellent marathons and some from hell and the difference was always in how I trained. Sorry you were sick, that is a awful way to feel but glad you are on the mend.
Thanks for the tips! Much appreciated.
Being sick or tired during training can be a big downer. It can set you back. But it’s important to take it easy and not make yourself feel worse or prolong the delay in training.
Yet, I don’t often listen to myself as well. The first week of the year also had a lot of folks at the office feeling sick, and I came down with a nasty cold for a few days. I tried to workout, but I just tired myself out and almost injured myself in the process.
At least the time spent on the toilet is keeping you off your feet to aid in your recovery.

It sure does suck. When I miss a day of running, I feel like I’m losing ground.
Ack, bummer about the illness. I hope you recover well and pace yourself so you don’t get sick again.
I just finished Week 2 out of 9 of the Couch to 5K app… very slow walk/run progressions. 3 total hours, 10.5mi – I am the proverbial turtle!
No alcohol so far in 2018
Nice work on Couch to 5K and the no alcohol! I was a little tempted to have a beer last night, but successfully fought off the urge.
As another one of the competitors, I guess we will be required to provide updates as well:
Miles run this week: 9 Miles
Max Distance: 3 Miles
Pace ~10min/mile
Time on Toilet: 4 hours (this includes Mr. Wow’s Blog reading time at work)
Beers: Lots (between two of us I think we polished off two growlers)
All in all we’re ready to start ramping up our mileage. Our toilet time has the potential to greatly increase as we are preparing to travel to a country with minimal food controls. We will see where we stand when we see you in person.
Until the next check in!

Sorry to hear you are sick!! No doubt your body gave up after trying to fight that weird voice losing illness everyone seemed to have at camp. I manage to make it through unscathed! The good news is that after this bug you will have less of you to carry when you get back to running. #SilverLining Hope you feel better soon!!
Sorry to hear your not feeling well Carl. There’s some nasty flu bugs going around this year.
Feel better dude!

Boy I hate to even talk about a nasty bug because I don’t get sick much and don’t want to jinx it. Half Marathons are tough but fun, I have run a few, actually I ran 11 miles yesterday, a good day. I haven’t run an actual half marathon race in years just because the cost has gotten crazy high. They are great events though and pizza and beer taste so much better afterwards.
Keep up the good work!
p.s. Throw in a few long (30-50 miles) bike rides will help with endurance.
I too had a real bad cold this week and had to shut down. I decided to listen to my body for a change. Here are my year so far results.
Run: 6.2 miles – (2 -5k training runs)
Ride: 39.8 miles
Swim:1000 yards
Yoga: 2 sessions
Weights: 0

Training thought of the Day.
“Some quit due to slow progress.
Never grasping the fact …
Slow progress is progress.”
Well, at least you didn’t drink more beers than miles run this week.
I’m a sucker for races, so I may join you guys in Portland for this race. I have a goal to run at least a half marathon in every state. This may be an opportunity to check Oregon off the list.

The Camp FI bug hit me hard. Got home Tuesday evening. Immediately started feeling a tingling in the throat. Started nights on Wednesday and finally broke down and went to urgent care today Sunday. I’m still going to try and make it though, Maybe J.D. can run it backward in that bunny suit to give me a chance. Miles=0000.0
“Maybe J.D. can run it backward in that bunny suit to give me a chance.”
I like this idea!
Get well soon! You will need to utilize all the time in the world to get in shape for that half-marathon. Best of luck!
Thanks, Team CF!
