When Life Goes Off The Rails

May 18, 2020 by Mr. 1500 Days 33 Comments

I'm a natural worrier. I'm also a natural planner. Two thoughts about worrying and planning:There is overlap: I'd guess that these two personality traits have strong Venn diagram overlap. In other words, if you're a worrier, you're probably a planner. It's toxic:Both worrying and planning take you out of the present moment. Worrying about a past that you can't change … [Read more...] about When Life Goes Off The Rails

How Are You Doing?

April 13, 2020 by Mr. 1500 Days 39 Comments

I promise that this won't turn into a COVID blog, but I just have a little more to say...FIRE is more relevant than ever right now. The economy is shut down, but significant savings allow you to ride out the storm. Mindy and I don't have to worry about losing our home or going hungry. Our biggest challenge is home-schooling a combative and resistant 10-year-old. Hardly … [Read more...] about How Are You Doing?

The Upside

April 6, 2020 by Mr. 1500 Days 8 Comments

Way back in 2013, Boulder County flooded. We had moved to Longmont only months before and now the police were knocking on our door ordering us to evacuate. The gentle stream near our new home normally looks like this:But in September of 2013, it looked like this:However, out of the chaos, something amazing happened.CommunityDuring the storm, Mindy and I … [Read more...] about The Upside

What We’re Doing With Money

March 30, 2020 by Mr. 1500 Days 32 Comments

First, let's talk numbers. They're not terrible.February 19: Our net-worth hit an all-time high of $2,585,214.March 16: Less than a month later, it was down to $2,280,151, a paper loss of $305,063.March 30: It has since recovered to $2,353,069, down $232,145 from that all-time high.If we were pure index investors, our numbers would be worse. The S&P 500 is down … [Read more...] about What We’re Doing With Money

Frozen Dinosaurs, Axe Murderers, Murderous Multiples, Ignorance, Recession, And Depression

March 22, 2020 by Mr. 1500 Days 43 Comments

So, back in August, I wrote this:And 7 months later, here we are.(Side-note: I sandbagged it. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones are 30% and 35% off their all-time highs respectively.)I'm no clairvoyant. I could have predicted a downturn at just about any time in history and been correct. Markets go mostly up, but they go down too. Frequently.I also had no idea … [Read more...] about Frozen Dinosaurs, Axe Murderers, Murderous Multiples, Ignorance, Recession, And Depression

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821
2/1: $3,582,368

Overall
2023 investment gains: $469,547
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,996,325
Net worth***: $3,812,368

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
