Day 6: Mud fest

May 10, 2015 by Mr. 1500 Days 24 Comments

This week (month?), I take a break from my normal posts to show you the bathroom I’m remodeling. I tried to finish the entire thing in 5 days and failed. I was going to quit these posts on Friday, but in the interest of transparency, I’m going to post until it’s done, hopefully very soon. Today, I tell you about day 6 (Sunday).

Mud Fest

I took Saturday off to attend a beer fest. It was the 7th straight day of rain and the party was outside in a field. This meant mud, lots and lots of mud. Epic mud. Flip-flop wearing person, what were you thinking?

The shindig started at noon and adding to the mud misery, it was also cold. As the day went on, it got progressively colder and windier. Near closing time, you couldn’t drink enough beer to keep warm. At least the lines for the porta-potties weren’t long.

Mud Fest II

Mud is also the term for drywall finishing compound. You slap the drywall mud on the seams and press tape in with a drywall knife. Come back when dry, sand and apply more mud. This process has two outcomes:

  • Your walls will be smooth, ready for primer and paint.
  • Everything in your house is covered in a fine layer of drywall dust. It gets everywhere.

Here is what it looks like now:

I am no drywall expert, but the end product will look fine. It just takes a lot of sanding. Like I said, dust everywhere.

IMG_20150427_215615877Speaking of dust, Steven from Even Steven Money was kind enough to hook me up with Zombie Dust, a very elusive and great American Pale Ale. Knowing that you have a bottle of Zombie Dust waiting for you makes the drywall dust tolerable. Thanks again Even!

Tomorrow

I just discovered a secret weapon that will help speed the mudding. More on that tomorrow.

The project will limp along now that I’ll be back at work on Monday. If everything goes well, I’ll be setting tile on Wednesday though and I should be able to wrap it up within 7 days.

Mud and Dust, sounds like a good web site name. Hey did you check out the latest post on mudandust.com. You would think after all these years there would be a better way with dry wall than tape and spackle. The dust is a killer.

Wow, I’ve had this exact same thought about 500 times! Really, who came up with this and why hasn’t anyone improved on it?

3 Floyds is such a great brewery. I am glad my state finally changed the limits on the number of barrels they can brew, so maybe they can finally meet demand in the state and the surrounding areas.

Yeah, they are awesome! They are making some of the top brews in the US, no doubt about that. Just wish that I had easier access…

These projects never go as planned! I bet the beer helped numb the feelings a little bit. 😉

You might need more than a 6-pack to finish the job 🙂

Something about a series always gets me hooked. You’ve turned this last week on your website into a lifestyle blog, but it still interests me.

I’ll be on the lookout for Mr. 1500 “How to DIY” videos on YouTube shortly.

Best of luck with the mudding. We’re going to a beer festival in Budapest on Friday and I think will mostly be trying sour beers. Will let you know how it goes and we’ll keep an eye out for zombie dust. 🙂

The drywall looks good! It really does get dust everywhere… kind of amazing how that happens. I’m rooting for you–this bathroom will be amazing!

    Beer fest! Sweet!

I’d brave the mud as well if there was a good one nearby.

Dry wall is looking good, nice progress! Keep us updated on when its finished!
