Troll Control

July 26, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 36 Comments

I'm writing on InvestmentZen today. Click over to read about the different phases of personal finance. Or, read about my battles with trolls first. You know when a post is popular because the haters come out of the swamps. This happened with one that I wrote for Budgets are Sexy last week. Business Insider and MSN republished it and Harvey didn't like my words at … [Read more...] about Troll Control

How I Invest in Real Estate without the Hassle

July 12, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 43 Comments

I love investing in real estate. In the past, I've flipped homes and owned rentals. In the most dramatic example of the former, I flipped a fancy lakefront home:My current home is nothing to sneeze at either:However, I haven't been very successful at flipping or renting lately. We live in a white-hot housing market where bidding wars are the norm for … [Read more...] about How I Invest in Real Estate without the Hassle

All-Time Highs!

May 25, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 22 Comments

Not that kind of high! Just because I live in Colorado where the green stuff is legal doesn't mean I partake. I can see where you might think it though given some of my posts. No, I'm talking about market highs. The Market is High! I have a friend in his late 20s who is trying to time the markets. To this I say, consult the experts.Warren Buffett: We continue to make … [Read more...] about All-Time Highs!

The Ultimate Investment Account for Entrepreneurs

April 19, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 21 Comments

I recently wrote a post for InvestmentZen that contains useful, actionable information (a rarity for me!) It's about self-directed solo 401(k)s, an incredibly useful investing account. Read why I opened this account below or click over to InvestmentZen to get to the good parts. I like diversification. However, until very recently, all of my money was in the stock market. And … [Read more...] about The Ultimate Investment Account for Entrepreneurs

I Love Owning a Home

February 3, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 22 Comments

Loads of folks hate home ownership lately. I'm not one of them. Under certain circumstances, a home can be both a place to live and an investment. And I should know; I built the core of my nest egg with live-in flips. My houses I buy houses that only a remodeler could love. I think the following are awesome:blue toilets brown appliances peeling yellow vinyl … [Read more...] about I Love Owning a Home

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821
2/1: $3,582,368
3/1: $3,716,852
4/1: $3,861,599

Gains: $748,778

Overall
Gains since 1/1/2013: $3,275,556
Net worth***: $4,091,599

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
