Ask the Readers: Would You Access Your 401(k) Before 59.5?

January 29, 2018 by Mr. 1500 Days 50 Comments

I was talking to Miss Mazuma a couple of weeks ago at Camp FI about 401(k)s. At one point, she mentioned this post from MMM. In the post, MMM states that you can have too much in your 401(k): Let’s say you are 30 now, and you’ve made the maximum contribution each year since graduating at age 21, and thus you have about $144,000 in the account. Let’s also assume your … [Read more...] about Ask the Readers: Would You Access Your 401(k) Before 59.5?

The Ultimate Investment Account for Entrepreneurs

April 19, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 21 Comments

I recently wrote a post for InvestmentZen that contains useful, actionable information (a rarity for me!) It's about self-directed solo 401(k)s, an incredibly useful investing account. Read why I opened this account below or click over to InvestmentZen to get to the good parts. I like diversification. However, until very recently, all of my money was in the stock market. And … [Read more...] about The Ultimate Investment Account for Entrepreneurs

The Day I got a 401(k) Tattoo on my…

January 28, 2016 by Mr. 1500 Days 23 Comments

As if you couldn't tell from the title, I'm a big fan of 401(k)s. Contributing to a 401(k) should come before all other investments for most. A 401(k) cuts the tax bill and allows for money to grow tax free. Many employers also match a percentage of your contributions.Who doesn't want free money??? Here are some fun facts about Mrs. 1500's and my 401(k)s:We have … [Read more...] about The Day I got a 401(k) Tattoo on my…

Big Huge WTF!!!

July 9, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 46 Comments

WTF!?! Now, this is a family blog, so I know that you know that acronym doesn't stand for anything that would be inappropriate for young ears. If so, please take your mind out of the gutter. It stands for "What the fee?" in reference to mutual fund fees.I have known for a while that the funds my employer offers through the 401k are stinkers. The funds are horrible … [Read more...] about Big Huge WTF!!!

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821
2/1: $3,582,368

Overall
2023 investment gains: $469,547
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,996,325
Net worth***: $3,812,368

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
