Charlie Munger

November 28, 2023 by Mr. 1500 Days 4 Comments

At the 2014 Berkshire Hathaway meeting, I was standing on the second floor of the exhibition hall when a golf cart pulled up next to me. I glanced over and saw that Charlie Munger was sitting in the passenger seat. My eyes nearly popped out of my head like in a cartoon.I was dumbfounded. The one thing I knew was that I didn't want to say anything to him:A moment … [Read more...] about Charlie Munger

October Performance: Tesla Take Down!

November 28, 2023 by Mr. 1500 Days 7 Comments

My main goal* was to build an investment and cash portfolio of $1,120,000* ($1,000,000 to retire on and $120,000 to pay off the house) in 1500 days**, starting from 1/1/2013 and ending in February of 2017. I made my goal in 2016, my 1500 Days are over, and I’ve left my job. In the interest of openness, I’ll continue to share my numbers. For … [Read more...] about October Performance: Tesla Take Down!

Unicorns, The Easter Bunny, And Safe Passive Returns

October 17, 2022 by Mr. 1500 Days 7 Comments

I was perusing the Choose FI group on Facebook last week and someone posted something that went like this:I pulled all my investments out of VTSAX in 2020 and have been sitting on cash ever since. I don't want to get back into VTSAX. I'm looking for something that is passive, has a good return, and is safe. Many of the comments were unkind. You clearly don't know what … [Read more...] about Unicorns, The Easter Bunny, And Safe Passive Returns

When The Game Doesn’t Feel Quite The Same

August 15, 2022 by Mr. 1500 Days 22 Comments

On a recent trip, I downloaded the book It to my Kindle. Light reading, right? The book quickly drew me in. I hadn't read fiction in a long, long time. The most recent issues of The Economist gathered dust while I plowed through Stephen King's novel. This was a change. For the past couple of decades, I've considered all of these activities to be a sub-optimal use of my … [Read more...] about When The Game Doesn’t Feel Quite The Same

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

7/1: $4,384,858
8/1: $4,539,865
9/1: $4,468,622
10/1: $4,353,063
11/1: $4,027,929

Gains: $915,108

Overall
Gains since 1/1/2013: $3,441,886
Net worth***: $4,257,929

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
