Notes From the First Week of Freedom

April 21, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 63 Comments

I announced that I was done with formal work last Friday. I sent my laptop back on Monday of this week. I'm not at all sorry to see it go. It was a piece of crap that caused endless frustration. Good riddance!I felt sorry for the technician who has to deal with this pile of junk, so I included some awesome dinosaur stickers:But we have real business to get to. … [Read more...] about Notes From the First Week of Freedom

Thursday Rant: One Week is Weak

July 2, 2015 by Mr. 1500 Days 56 Comments

I had an amazing and disturbing thought the other day. First, I must give you some background. Work, work and workAs long as I can remember, I've always worked and worked hard. Before I was 14, I mowed lawns, shoveled driveways, delivered papers and various other hustles. As soon as I turned 14, I started at my first real job. All through high-school, I kept various … [Read more...] about Thursday Rant: One Week is Weak

Yo ho, yo ho, an FI life for me!

June 29, 2015 by Mr. 1500 Days 73 Comments

Colorado summers are pretty great. The climate is dry, so the humidity doesn't overwhelm you. The other thing I enjoy are the huge temperature swings. Even if the mercury climbs to 100 on a cloudless afternoon in mid-July, it isn't unusual for the temperature to swing back down into the 50s at night. I love this:I hate heat. If it was hot all of the time, I would go nuts. … [Read more...] about Yo ho, yo ho, an FI life for me!

Hitting the Open Road, 1500 Style

February 16, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 9 Comments

Today, I leave on a trip. I'm heading to lovely (even if it is super cold) Madison, Wisconsin to visit my sister for the weekend. On Monday, I'll drive down to Chicago to test a new computer system that I designed. I'll then head down to Memphis, Tennessee to visit my other sister who is attending college there. Finally, I'll head back to Colorado. My trip got me thinking about … [Read more...] about Hitting the Open Road, 1500 Style

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821
2/1: $3,582,368

Overall
2023 investment gains: $469,547
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,996,325
Net worth***: $3,812,368

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
