It Was Never About Frugality

January 24, 2022 by Mr. 1500 Days 42 Comments

Last week, I was contemplating a purchase. The windshield washer pump in our old Honda Element had died. Here is what I did:Looked up the price of the part online. Yay, only $13!Looked up the repair process on YouTube. Opposite of yay; it looks like a pain in the ass.Called a local repair place to get a quote: Between $200 and $300. Ugggh!Watched the YouTube video again. … [Read more...] about It Was Never About Frugality

Fitness, Frugality, and FIRE

May 6, 2019 by Mr. 1500 Days 44 Comments

At the age of 45, I'm healthier than I've been in decades. My weight is about 155, a two-decade low. Yesterday I ran a 5k faster than I've ever run one before. It's all because of FIRE.About The Time A Friend Said FIRE Would Kill MeWhen I first discovered FIRE way back in 2012, I embraced it almost immediately. I say "almost" because I thought Mr. Money Mustache was … [Read more...] about Fitness, Frugality, and FIRE

Ask the Readers: Frugality versus Minimalism

July 10, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 63 Comments

I had this conversation with Mrs. 1500 on Saturday:Me: Why do we have a million boxes of cereal? Mrs. 1500: When I see it on sale, I stock up. Me: But we don't have a huge kitchen. We should just buy what we need for the next couple of weeks. I don't care if it costs more. Mrs. 1500:Mrs. 1500 note [after she saw this image]: "You're sleeping on the couch … [Read more...] about Ask the Readers: Frugality versus Minimalism

Living Right with Montana Money Adventures

April 12, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 62 Comments

If you think money is the goal of us FI bloggers, you'd be wrong. Well, I concede that there may be some of us who have a shallow goal, like accumulating a certain amount of money in a certain amount of days. ***looks in mirror, shakes head, sighs*** On the surface, money is the goal. But deep down, living right is really what we're trying to accomplish. And Ms. Montana is … [Read more...] about Living Right with Montana Money Adventures

Ask the Readers: Is Early Retirement an All or Nothing Proposition?

December 5, 2016 by Mr. 1500 Days 69 Comments

Hi there, Mrs. 1500 back to recap last week's question, How much do you spend on haircuts? If you recall, I got an amazing haircut, but I paid a lot for it. Mr. 1500 was surprised at the cost, and I asked you for your opinion. (I'll pass the baton to Mr. 1500 for today's question after our review.)Many of you agreed that $152 isn't all that much for a really great cut, and … [Read more...] about Ask the Readers: Is Early Retirement an All or Nothing Proposition?

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
