Can I Win The Warren Buffett Bet? (Year 5 Update)

January 16, 2023 by Mr. 1500 Days 8 Comments

In December of 2017, Dividend Growth Investor (DGI) asked me if I’d like to duplicate the famous Warren Buffett bet. For those unfamiliar, in 2008 Buffett famously challenged the hedge fund industry:Can you beat the S&P 500 over a 10 year period?Buffett won as the hedge fund got clobbered by the S&P 500.But, I like fun experiments and a … [Read more...] about Can I Win The Warren Buffett Bet? Unicorns, The Easter Bunny, And Safe Passive Returns

October 17, 2022 by Mr. 1500 Days 7 Comments

I was perusing the Choose FI group on Facebook last week and someone posted something that went like this:I pulled all my investments out of VTSAX in 2020 and have been sitting on cash ever since. I don't want to get back into VTSAX. I'm looking for something that is passive, has a good return, and is safe. Many of the comments were unkind. You clearly don't know what … [Read more...] about Unicorns, The Easter Bunny, And Safe Passive Returns

When The Game Doesn’t Feel Quite The Same

August 15, 2022 by Mr. 1500 Days 22 Comments

On a recent trip, I downloaded the book It to my Kindle. Light reading, right? The book quickly drew me in. I hadn't read fiction in a long, long time. The most recent issues of The Economist gathered dust while I plowed through Stephen King's novel. This was a change. For the past couple of decades, I've considered all of these activities to be a sub-optimal use of my … [Read more...] about When The Game Doesn’t Feel Quite The Same

Stock Picking Experiment, Year 2 (Still Winning!)

January 20, 2020 by Mr. 1500 Days 12 Comments

In December of 2017, Dividend Growth Investor (DGI) asked me if I wanted to bet against Warren Buffett. Well, kind of. Allow me to explain...Buffett’s Big BetWay back in 2007, Buffett challenged the hedge fund industry to a bet. All the hedge fund managers had to do was beat the S&P 500 over a 10 year period. Buffett didn’t get many takers, but he completely crushed … [Read more...] about Stock Picking Experiment, Year 2 (Still Winning!)

Give Me Your Best Lines!

December 10, 2019 by Mr. 1500 Days 52 Comments

I love DIY because I make it amusing.Design is fun, especially when you nail it.So is construction. Except when you nail your hand. Never mind.Drinking a beer after looking at a great space you created is fun too. Just don't drink the beer beforehand or you'll nail your hand even more.During construction, I love to leave easter eggs. Not real eggs, that would be gross. … [Read more...] about Give Me Your Best Lines!

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
