50 Years Left Of Vacation Days

July 5, 2018 by Mr. 1500 Days 24 Comments

One of the great parts about FIRE life is that it allows you to live unconventionally. Instead of a hurried, one week vacation, you can enjoy lazy, multi-week road trips. I’m in the middle of one right now.

The Road More Traveled

We left Colorado on a Saturday and our first stop was Casey Brewing, famous for producing really good beer:

Our next stop was Moab. Moab was beautiful, but really hot:

After Moab, we headed to Las Vegas to visit with family. On the way, we stopped at the Iceberg Drive-in. This was not a healthy decision:

Early one morning, Older Daughter (OD) and I headed off to Red Rock Canyon to hike Turtlehead Peak:

The dark mountain is Turtlehead Peak.

I didn’t think OD would be able to complete the hike. It’s a 5-mile round-trip with 2000′ of elevation gain. And just to make it more difficult, the temperature was close to 100 degrees. However, OD is stubborn and persistent. 90 minutes later, we were standing at the top:

After Las Vegas, we headed to Los Angeles:

We spent the July 4th holiday with the Waffles on Wednesday couple. And since it was Wednesday:

On Saturday, we’ll head down to San Diego for 4 days. After that, we head back to southern Utah for a family reunion before heading home.

50 Years Left Of Vacation Days

I’m thankful for my FIREy life. It’s great to be able to meander at a leisurely pace:

  • Much of our time in California will be spent mindlessly wandering around the beach. No problem!! We’re going to be here for 8 days!
  • We’ll spend multiple days in the car this trip. No problem! I have 50 years left of vacation days!

Life is good.

No kidding! It’s been great suddenly having all the time in the world to read, think, and walk around.

Looks like a great family road trip! I don’t know if I’ll make it to 90, but 50 years of vacation does have a pretty nice ring to it!

    Enjoy your trip guys! 🙂

I’m in the middle of two weeks of holidays at the moment (I love being a teacher at the moment!) and I can tell you, 50 more years of this wouldn’t be hard to take at all.
And these holidays I’m not even going anywhere!

If “50 years left of vacation” isn’t motivation to get our financial lives in order, I don’t know what is!

I’m glad you had a bit of hiking in there to offset all those beers and carbo delights! What was that burger/fried/monstrosity of deliciousness!? Were those onions rings on top??

That monstrosity was the Rodeo Burger which clocks in at about 600 calories. That’s nothing compared to the shake (800) or onion rings (150 each).

50 Years Left Of Vacation Days. Read this article I really enjoy when they enjoy a good life here. I always wanted to have a moment to watch the mountains, the sea, enjoy the cuisine. And I think next time I can do these things.

Neat trip! We’re heading down to CA next week and will take it slow this time. We’ll stop by a few roadside attractions and check them out. Should be a lot of fun.
I’m taking it really easy this summer. Back to blogging more seriously after school starts. 😉

Wow, Moab in summer, you guys are brave. Last time I was in Utah in summer I felt like I was being cooked from the inside!

I know, right? And the thing about me is that I’m NOT one of those people who like heat. I really, REALLY despise it. I should just avoid the Southwestern US in the summer.

    Looks like a lovely trip!

P.S. What is that on your hamburger? An onion ring? I don’t eat meat anymore, but that looks tempting even to me! 🙂

Your post title certainly caught my attention, as I sit here on my last day of vacation – at least for this trip. We’ve been at the Outer Banks in North Carolina, enjoying a beach house with extended family. It’s been a great trip but the reality is that I still need to head back to work on Monday (and Tuesday and Wednesday, too, during the World Cup semifinals. Argh!). Fortunately we have a trip out to California planned for later this summer, but I look forward to joining the 50-years-of-vacation club.
