The $1,000,000 Question

April 19, 2021 by Mr. 1500 Days 33 Comments

The 1500 house has been bustling with activity lately. Mindy and I have decided that we're going to finish our current remodeling projects and then take a break. We'll resume in the fall when the girls are back in school. Getting our place to a good stopping point has taken a considerable amount of effort. Our home has 4 levels:Level 1 (Basement) This is mostly done, but … [Read more...] about The $1,000,000 Question

This was a busy year for Mindy and me:New house: I'm typing this article in the home we just moved into a couple of days ago. We've been casually looking at acquiring more real estate ever since we moved to Longmont and have even made some offers, but none were accepted. Until now. It turns out we needed to find a home with a feature no one else wanted:New business: … [Read more...] about Ask The Readers: How Are You?

Ask The Readers: Your Why Of FI?

September 9, 2019 by Mr. 1500 Days 30 Comments

I didn't know what early retirement was until October of 2012. I had a very bad, no good, terrible day at work and googled something like:How do I retire early?Up came Mr. Money Mustache and JD Roth, two fellows who had retired early. My first thought was this:What kind of scam have I stumbled upon? When does the sales pitch come??And then I read MMM's post on … [Read more...] about Ask The Readers: Your Why Of FI?

Ask The Readers: Resolution Solutions?

March 11, 2019 by Mr. 1500 Days 28 Comments

First, we must get down to contest business! Last week, I announced that I'm giving away three Wahl shavers. All you had to do was write a Haiku. I brought in guest judge Physician on FIRE (aka Poet Laureate of the Frozen North) to judge your submissions. Here are the winners per Dr. Haiku:Grand prize (Wahl Elite Pro): HeatherHMy spouse pays 30For each head and beard … [Read more...] about Ask The Readers: Resolution Solutions?

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821
2/1: $3,582,368
3/1: $3,716,852

Overall
2023 investment gains: $604,031
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $3,130,809
Net worth***: $3,946,852

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
