Six Thoughts On Losing $1,000,000

March 1, 2022 by Mr. 1500 Days 23 Comments

Note: I wrote this post last week before war broke out. It's silly and narcissistic to worry about money when others are fleeing for their lives and children are dying (<-- WARNING! This links to a story about a child killed in the attack and is graphic, tragic, and all-around horrible.).#perspectiveMy normal modus operandi is to not pay attention to news that isn't … [Read more...] about Six Thoughts On Losing $1,000,000

2021, 2022, VTSAX And Chill

January 10, 2022 by Mr. 1500 Days 11 Comments

Wait, 2021 is over already? What the heck happened? 2020 trudged along like a drunken sloth trying to scale Mt. Everest. 2021 seemed to fly by in seconds...2021 was a pretty great year. I'm thankful for all of the adventures I got to experience:I'm even more thankful that my daily life was interesting, challenging, and filled with good humans.Money, $$$, … [Read more...] about 2021, 2022, VTSAX And Chill

The Anti-Withdrawal Strategy: How To Beat Sequence Risk

December 13, 2021 by Mr. 1500 Days 16 Comments

Reader note: My example in the original version of this post was poor. Thanks to Shaun and TMV for pointing this out in the comments. I have rewritten parts of the post with a better example.Perhaps the biggest financial risk for an early retiree is sequence risk. This is selling your stocks into a bad market early in retirement. Here's a fancy definition:Sequence risk … [Read more...] about The Anti-Withdrawal Strategy: How To Beat Sequence Risk

Tesla, My First $1,000,000 Investment

November 3, 2021 by Mr. 1500 Days 17 Comments

I wrote this post mostly for myself. Writing about stuff helps me think through it. Don't take any of this as investment advice. You'd be silly to listen to a grown human who plays with plastic dinosaurs anyway. Do your own research!Sometimes you get lucky.I bought some Tesla stock back in 2012 on a whim. Here was my reasoning:I liked the Model S and admired Elon … [Read more...] about Tesla, My First $1,000,000 Investment

April 2021 Performance Update: Call Me Cacafuego

June 7, 2021 by Mr. 1500 Days 46 Comments

My main goal* was to build an investment and cash portfolio of $1,120,000* ($1,000,000 to retire on and $120,000 to pay off the house) in 1500 days**, starting from 1/1/2013 and ending in February of 2017. I made my goal in 2016, my 1500 Days are over, and I’ve left my job. In the interest of openness, I’ll continue to share my numbers.Call Me … [Read more...] about April 2021 Performance Update: Call Me Cacafuego

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
