Days 7-9: Thursday pants

May 13, 2015 by Mr. 1500 Days 33 Comments

This week (month?), I take a break from my normal posts to show you the bathroom I’m remodeling. I tried to finish the entire thing in 5 days and failed. I was going to quit these posts on Friday, but in the interest of transparency, I’m going to post until it’s done, hopefully very soon. Today, I tell you about days 7-9 (Monday-Wednesday).

My clean workpants
My clean workpants

I have some really old, nasty, stained, smelly, vulgar, grimy, threadbare, holey, disgusting, gross, filthy, dirty, cruddy and unsightly clothes. Besides that, they are fine. Anyway, Mrs. 1500 is always like:

You should throw those old clothes out!!!

I can’t toss them because I need them for dirty tasks. I can’t even eat half a meal without spilling half the food all over myself. Pizza and anything Mexican are always a bad idea if I’m wearing anything white (or anything at all for that matter). You should see what I look like after I’ve been doing chores around the home.

Stop me, I’m getting distracted. This longwinded opening is leading to the bathroom update, I swear.

Stuck in mud

I had to go back to work this week. 10 hour workdays don’t leave much time at all to work on the bathroom or get much of anything else done. This post over at Frugalwoods really resonated with me. Normal work-life is a compromise, leaving little time to squeeze in any of the other 5000 things I need to do.

Stop me, I’m getting distracted again.

Tonight, I finished the mudding (drywall finishing). Here it is:

IMG_20150513_190827014
Mud city. Can you find Frugalsaurus in the picture*?

The project should pick up steam now. Here is my new schedule:

  • Sand the walls a bit and then paint. Mrs. 1500 will do this tomorrow during the day.
  • Tomorrow evening, I will lay the first couple lines of tile.
  • Friday evening, I will lay the rest of the tile.
  • Saturday evening, we will hang the vanity, another cabinet and grout the floor.
  • Sunday, we’ll catch up on whatever is left.

We probably won’t be 100% done, but it will be enough to put this never ending saga to rest.

I’m so tired.

I’m so dirty.

*Frugalsaurus is hiding behind that partial wall. I’m so funny.

Ha ha, that was not Mr. 1500, but his Clark Kent alter-ego. Actually, I’m a nerd always, so I don’t deviate much from the Clark Kent persona.

Word on the street is that beer always helps. At some point, you will have to email me and shoot me a mailing address, I’ll send some fine Texas brews.

Beer never hurts. Yes, I will do the same as soon as things settle down. How about later in June?

Your pants look like some of mine! I am way messier than Mr PoP when it comes to this stuff. I’ll have huge swaths of it all over me after a day of painting, whereas he’ll have just a couple tiny smudges (probably from hugging me) by the time we’re done.

The work compromise is non-trivial. Our kitchen is basically on hold for most of May since Mr PoP has major work projects this week and next. We’re hoping to be able to attack the windows on our 4-day Memorial Day weekend, but having the house sit with no progress for close to a month before that is a little disheartening.

You and Mr. PoP sound exactly like the Frugalwoods (read their comment). Funny!

Yeah, I HATE gaps in progress. My favorite way to work is to crank it all at lightning speed.

Always double your estimates for these sorts of things I find.

Loving the dirty work pants (lol). I have a few pairs of those myself! The sign of a good DIYer if there ever was one!

I wore the same jeans for two weeks while I remodeled my bathroom. What’s the point in washing them if they’re just going to get dirty again right away? And they’re already broken in for the next project.

Nice pants! I have a similar pair. Mr. FW, miraculously, always seems to stay pretty clean. We’ll paint and I’ll look like a bulletin board for paint colors and he’s almost unscathed. He’s a weirdly clean man, I surmise. The workweek limitations are such a frustrating aspect of trying to DIY everything while holding a full-time job.

I feel like we’re delaying a few needed house projects right now just because we’re not sure how to squeeze them into the leftover hours of each week. Might need to take vacation days. At any rate, I’m excited for your progress and sounds like you’re in the homestretch!

Ahhh, you have discovered Mr. FW’s superpower. That is a highly useful one for your current and future lives.

Homestretch it is, but after another marathon 11 hour day at my job, I got almost nothing accomplished.

I have a pair of workpants like that too – mine are of the carhartt variety, and if you ever need to replace those ones (but then again, they look fine to me) look into carhartts. they are awesome.

Have to agree with you on full time jobs getting in the way of DIY projects. Occasionally my dad will take a day or 2 off (usually around a vacation) and “get things done” around the house. I dont understand it at all, because when im burning precious vacation time, I want to be on a vacation (or at the very least, not doing jack). on the other hand, he does get a lot done, so maybe it’s not the worst thing.

Great job on the Nightline clip!

The jeans I am wearing have holes in both knees and are scruffy. I love them. My wife doesn’t like them. I wear them most days.

    Keep trucking on the bathroom.

Did you find a trick for the drywall corners? It is just about time for my kitchen to start and I am looking forward to the week off of “work” to get this done.

Please post pictures when you get done…especially the oompa loompa sink.

I would keep the pants. I have several pair like that. I buy a Carthart style of work pants, and I would suspect that most people I know think I never change my pants. I have a lot of the same color t-shirts too, free at Menards…
