So sorry for the loss of your father. It’s never easy, and made all the more difficult during the crazy times we are living in. My mother recently passed away- I can imagine your pain.
Well, hell. That just sucks. I wish for you to experience now the grief and complicated feelings and the whole process, with hope that you come out the other side able to move forward with even more intention, dedication, and a way to love and forgive the human being he was. Sending you impotent but nonetheless good wishes.
So sorry Carl. Everyone once in a while I am working on some project in the basement and I come across my beloved grandfather and his old wood plane, still in its box from who knows how long ago. I pick it up and smile, and think of the times we had together.
Sure, I could take one. Should I email it to you or something? I don’t think there is a way to include it in the comments or anything. Or maybe I could post it to Instagram or something and comment the link… BC | FrugalWheels recently posted…How to start over in life… with FIRE
I”m so sorry about your Dad. I’ve only just found your blog and never commented before, but wanted to share this:
My Dad died from cancer at age 61 in May. It sucked and continues to suck. I’ve spent a lot of times looking for things on the internet to make me feel better–which doesn’t really work–but perhaps the most comforting I’ve come across is this old reddit comment by u/GSnow about grief (assuming the link works)::
My condolences to you and your family. Sounds like he was a complicated but good man. Enjoy your happy memories of him. 🙂
Thinking of your family during this difficult time and wishing you peace. Hoping you and your girls enjoy that long bike ride soon!
Ah man, that’s a rough followup. Healing for you and your family from one pair of your readers that have been following along for a while.

Take care in these difficult times, my friend.
Hey BC, thank you for the thoughtful note.
Do you have a picture of that wood plane? I’d like so see it.

Take care of yourself.
BCG, thank you for sharing that. Perhaps my favorite line is this one:
“The waves never stop coming, and somehow you don’t really want them to.”
It reminds me of the movie Inside Out. Instead of trying to suppress sadness, it’s best to accept and even embrace it.
My condolences. I’m sure your father was proud of who you became, with his help and despite the things he did wrong.
