Introducing FI Clubs

May 10, 2018 by Mr. 1500 Days 8 Comments

One of the best parts of the FIRE movement is the community. There are FIREy folks all over the world eager to chat about saving money, play board games and proudly show off their 2003 Honda with 220,000 miles on the clock. The hard part can be finding these people:

Is the lady in the rusted car with a coat hangar antennae a FIRE Follower or just a struggling college student?

Is the guy with the ratty clothes a secret millionaire?

We fly under the radar. We don’t show off. We don’t wave a frugal flag.

The internet has solved some of these issues. We now have Choose FI groups and Mr. Money Mustache forums. And now, there is FI Clubs to help connect the world.

Introducing FI Clubs

Today, my friends Michael (Uncommon Dream) and Sean (2 Frugal Dudes) officially launch FI Clubs, a site to help find FI groups. They did this for the love of the community and it’s completely free.

What are FI Clubs? Why should I join this site?

FI Clubs is a site that helps connect you to existing resources. It’s not meant to replace existing groups, but help you find them.

I’ve already created a group on Meetup. Why do I need this?

That’s great! Register your group on FI Clubs to help others in the community find you. You don’t need to move away from your current platform.

I don’t run a club.

That’s fine. FI Clubs is for individuals too. Use the site to help find clubs.

One of my favorite ways to use FI Clubs will be for connecting with others when I travel. FI Clubs will help me meet folks in new towns.

Happiness

The quality of our relationships is one of the biggest indicators of happiness. And this is the very thing I’ve struggled with in the past.

Where is my tribe?

I’ve since discovered that others like me are everywhere; you just have to find them. And FI Clubs is a great way to do just that.

Woah! I check in for my weekly dose of FI insight and fart jokes and I find my ugly mug front and center. I love the FI club concept. Social media/forums/etc is an inadequate substitute for finding your local FI tribe.

“Is the guy with ratty clothes a millionaire?” I really wanted this to end with pics/vids of you attempting to ask random strangers if they were secretly millionaires…the reactions would have been priceless.

Hey Carl!! Loved the community up there in Longmont/Fort Collins! Hope FI Clubs can create more of that. Amazing hospitality during my visit and good share of fart jokes 🙂

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
