Kitchen Remodel: Day 1/5

April 19, 2014 by Mr. 1500 Days 18 Comments

Starting on Friday, 4/18, I’m going to attempt to remodel my kitchen in 5 days. With some luck, beer and a lot of hard work, I’ll complete it by 4/22, end of day. Each evening, I’ll document my progress. Here is update #1.

Old kitchen
Old kitchen

I bailed from work at 4pm today and immediately started tearing up my kitchen. Since I work from my home, I was able to start about 90 seconds after I logged off. It would have been less than 90 seconds, but I had to put my crappy work pants on.

So today, I removed most of the cabinets. Taking them out is pretty easy. Undo a couple screws with the drill and off the cabinet comes.

Monstrosity

My other other big accomplishment was modifying a wall for our refrigerator. Our food cooling device is a massive beast. While I love the counter depth refrigerators, I don’t like how much they cost. The good thing is that the wall that the refrigerator will back up to is 12″ thick (used to be an exterior wall). So, I hacked away at it and now, my refrigerator will be counter depth.

End of day 1

Stats:

  • Hours spent: 6
  • Trips to Home Depot: 0
  • Injuries: 1 (jabbed myself with the drill)
  • Beers consumed: 2
  • Prognosis: Good, I think I’m on target.

Day 2 Plans

My blood is in this project literally!
My blood is in this project literally!

Tomorrow, I hope to accomplish the following:

  • Remove the rest of the cabinets
  • Finish mudding my refrigerator indent
  • Take out the tile
  • Move refrigerator water line and gas line for oven
  • Start hanging the new cabinets

Wow, I have not slept well all week and am exhausted! Good night and I’ll talk to you tomorrow!

Awesome Mr 1500. If possible, I’d like to see a photo of your fridge cove…..before you mud and drywall. I’ve done a lot of remodeling and I’m very curious how you did this without hacking it to pieces. Good luck man. I’ll be following along

Poop, I didn’t take a picture. The short version is that the wall is 12″ thick and was framed with 2x4s on both sides. I opened a hole in my kitchen with the old Sawzall. After that, it was easy to frame out a little box.

In subsequent updates, can we please have ‘beer type’ in addition to ‘number of beers consumed’? I think that is a very important detail for these types of projects 🙂

    Good luck!

smart thinking on the fridge cove. That doesn’t negatively affect the cooling capabilities of the fridge, does it? like there are no overheating concerns, would there be? if not, then I’m surprised more people hadn’t thought of that!

This particular refrigerator expels the heat through a panel in the front (I think most do). so it won’t be an issue.

Agree with Mad Fientist. I would like to know what type of beer you are drinking.

Also, I think this phase is commonly referred to as creative destruction! Best of luck with phase 2!

Haha, shame you’re going to paint over that smiley. We’ve put random marks inside walls and on studs as we’ve worked throughout the house. I like to imagine some faraway future when someone will find them and think, “who were these weirdos and why did they love smiley faces so much?”

Great progress on day 1. Looking forward to hearing how hard tile removal is/isn’t.

Tile removal is going super well. They come off without much of an issue, although we’re going to have some scraping to do.

Yes, we put little notes in the walls too! Sometimes, just smileys, other times, Warren Buffett quotes. Ha!!

Great work. Very good beers consumed/injury ratio. Mine is usually the inverse. I’d also like to see an ISSW (Index and Severity of Swear Words). This measure tends to have an inverse relation to the beers consumed.

      Hilarious!

Yes, my jobs are never swear free. We have a relative who has been taking our kids out of the home while we work, so I can swear with reckless abandon now too.

I love the way you write the progress! And yeah, I laughed a little about the beers consumed. I can feel you are having fun with the project. Keep it up! I can’t wait for more updates.

[…] Make a plan. You don’t need to know what’s actually wrong with the item that needs to be fixed or know precisely how to replace exterior window trim but you need to develop a plan which will most likely consist of a Plan A, B, and maybe even C.  The washer was making a rattling noise only during the spin cycle, I took some trial and error guesses and thought something was loose in the machine or maybe a belt had come off.  Honestly, you are not going to know exactly what is wrong.  I’m pretty sure Mr. 1500 doesn’t just walk into a kitchen remodel   with a beer in his hand and say “Let’s Remodel Some Kitchen” he has to have a plan.  Although, now that it’s been said, I hope that’s what occurred.
