Kitchen Remodel: Day 2/5

April 19, 2014 by Mr. 1500 Days 9 Comments

Starting on Friday, 4/18, I’m going to attempt to remodel my kitchen in 5 days. With some luck, beer and a lot of hard work, I’ll complete it by 4/22, end of day. Each evening, I’ll document my progress. Here is update #2 (4/19/2014).

Today was a good day:

  • We finished tearing out the old cabinets and hung some of the new ones.
  • Most of the tile is now torn out.
  • I moved the oven gas line and refrigerator water line.

I thought that I’d be a bit farther along actually, but a friend invited me out to a local microbrewery, so I cut out early (the evil siren call of beer). However, I’m still on target to wrap up this work in 5 days, if not before.

Stats:

  • Hours spent today: 8 (total: 14)
  • Trips to Home Depot: 1
  • Injuries today: 0 (a day without puncture wounds is a happy day)
  • Beers consumed: 3 (total: 5)
  • Prognosis: Great, things are moving along fast. As long as I can get a line of tile in tomorrow, I’ll be in good shape.

Oh, and for the Mad Fientist, today’s beers were:

  • G’Knight Imperial Red Ale (Oskar Blues, Longmont, CO)
  • Honker’s Ale (Goose Island, Chicago)
  • Hop Abomination (Dry Dock, Aurora, CO)

As long as we’re on the topic of beer, a couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of finding Enjoy By at a local store. This is one fine brew. If you have the means and can find it, I highly recommend picking some up.

Here is where we started the day

Orange, really? Did people really have orange kitchens? I like the color; have an orange car. But not in a kitchen. Ever.

So what made you guys decide to lay the tile around the cabinets rather than having tile flush wall to wall?

Also, I totally love the orange kitchen. Reminds me of some of the more hideous ones we saw while foreclosure hunting. (Think counters and cabinets all avacado colored…)

Avocado cabinets! Uggh! One past home had a blue toilet and tub. Ick!

“So what made you guys decide to lay the tile around the cabinets rather than having tile flush wall to wall?”

I’ve done it both ways. I used to be completely against what I’m doing now (butting tile up to cabinets), but I’ve come around a bit. In this job, I’m doing it for these reasons:
-> The floor isn’t the same height underneath the cabinets. It would be a huge big pain to level it all out.
-> Not going under the cabinets will save some money.
-> I’ve become pretty good with the old tile saw. I can get very close to the cabinets and when I put the kickboard on, it won’t look any different than if I had gone under.

Lookin’ good. You must have heard about the old wives tale that certain colors make people hungry – especially reds and yellows and everything in between. That is why all the big fast food chains’ logos only contain those colors (McD’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Hardee’s, etc). Culver’s must have not got the notice…

Also, I didn’t realize until just now that Oskar Blues is brewed in your neck of the woods. I knew it was a CO beer, but didn’t know it was in your backyard. Cheers!

Hi Buck- Oskar Blues is very close. This is a good and a bad thing all at the same time. I must say that prefer your Ale Asylum though!

I had not heard of the color thing. Must not affect me much because I’ll take blue Culvers over any of those other guys!

    Some good beer choices there!

I actually just had a Left Hand milk stout yesterday and thought of you since it’s from your neck of the woods. It was very tasty and it tasted even better because it was free…got to love sponsored conference after-parties 🙂

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
