For the next 10 days, I’ll be writing about my road trip to drop my daugther off at college in California. It’s going to be 3,000 miles. I’m taking a northern route to get there to avoid the heat for the first part of the trip:
Old Me would maximize driving, putting in 800-1,000 miles per day to get to the destination as fast as possible. New Me is taking it a little slower. We’ll take 10 days just to get to SoCal and then spend 4 leisurely days there. Along the way, we’ll stop whenever we see something interesting.
Day 1: Longmont to Craig
We didn’t even make it out of Colorado on day 1. Instead, we left at 10:30am after having breakfast with a group of friends. Then, we took the scenic route through Rocky Mountain National Park which never disappoints.
Highlights
- Buc-ees: well, maybe this is the opposite of a highlight. Lots of people gorging on lot of food.
- Rocky Mountain National Park
- spotted a moose and her calf!
- stayed with relatives in Craig
- we’re listening to: Defending Jacob
My car, a Tesla Model Y, has an autonomous driving feature. I’m letting the car drive the entire way which is very relaxing. You still have to pay attention in case the car does something stupid, but today I didn’t have to intervene at all except to park.
Numbers
- miles covered: 251.2
- squats: 100 (I do body weight squats at rest stops)
Next we head to Salt Lake City for one night. Then it’s on to Reno and Santa Rosa. Reno is going to be hot; 98 both days we’re there. Ugggh. I was trying to avoid the heat, but it’s still better than Las Vegas which will be almost 110 on those days. Oof. Maybe I’ll take a swim in Lake Tahoe!
More 1500 Days!!!

Hi there – I have followed you for years and admire greatly what you have done.
I live in SF Bay Area. If you happen to come here (Santa Rosa is not too far :)), I’d love to meet you and have lunch or coffee.
Please drop me an email if you are able to.
thanks so much.
