For the next couple of weeks, I’ll be documenting my road trip to drop my kid off at school.
Today we left Craig Colorado and headed to Salt Lake City (SLC). Utah is our first new state:
In Salt Lake City, we saw a whale breaching from the center of a roundabout, the state capitol, and Temple Square:
Numbers
- miles covered: 329
- total miles 580
- squats: 160 (I do body weight squats at rest stops)
- total squats: 260
- FSD interventions: 1 (On a rural highway, the car mistook tar lines in the road for an obstruction and swerved. I didn’t wait to see what the car was going to do and took over. Maybe Tesla was too hasty to abandon LIDAR or at least HD radar? On the other hand, when FSD has issues, it’s always in rural areas. It does great in Longmont. The Tesla fanboys would say it’s lack of data in rural areas. Dunno.)
- total FSD interventions: 1
Next
We head to Reno next. After that we go to Santa Rosa where we’ll meet up with friends and also see Buddy Guy. After that, we head to Morro Bay, passing through San Francisco.
More 1500 Days!!!
You can also find me (and the dinosaurs) at:
- Longmont: Want to join our community? Get your ass here! While your at it, join our coworking spot!
- Instagram: Pretty pictures of dinosaurs, sunsets, and nail guns!
- Twitter: Spontaneous, often insane, ramblings
- YouTube: My channel is mostly devoted to home improvement, but I have some other material coming up soon too.
- Buying a Tesla? Use my referral code to get some perks!

Awesome! Utah is one of my favorite states. Lots of national parks and things to do. Have a safe trip to Reno. Hopefully you are spending some time at Lake Tahoe.
Thanks for posting, this is fun to read. I imagine being able to do stuff like this without a timeline myself in about eleven years. Just gotta get that savings rate a couple percent higher…
Contact email a no-go, switching to here, at least for now.

Hey Carl, long time reader, first time caller, or however you change that metaphor from the talk radio standard.
It might be adding to a big pile of thank yous, all the same a continued thank you for the blog and keeping it going for all these years. Your blog above all others. I think, has maintained what I can only describe as the most straightforward honesty, after discovering the whole FIRE movement for myself some 10 years ago and diving all the way in. It probably helps that we are similar in age, though I’d say moreso your character and overall life approach have kept me (and many others) tuned in year after year. Thank you for the voice, the candor, and all the effort to share your experiences on the journey. For someone like myself still working towards that personal cut-over date, those experiences help keep everything tempered in the good times and the bad – I am grateful for that, and all the appreciation your way for taking the time.
In short – thank you. You rock.
And on the off chance you’re still in the Santa Rosa area, Moonlight Brewing makes a fantastic Czech pilsner (Reality Czech) and a legendary in the area dark lager (Death and Taxes). I hope you enjoy California and continued best wishes.
I sent you an email on the 20th. Please let me know if you saw it!
I do not remember for how long I want to go to the salt lake Tabernacle. I often watch the Mormon Tabernacle Choir orchestra performance on the Christmas eve and wish to be their among them. Glad that you are having the best time of your life. By the way, I am one of the silent readers of your blog and have been on my FIRE journey ever since the birth of my second daughter during the Covid-19 and have plans to retire early in my late thirties and travel to all the places I wish to. Thanks for sharing.
