Seattle And Friday Harbor!

March 23, 2022 by Mr. 1500 Days 9 Comments

The girls are on spring break this week, so we got out of town. We flew into Seattle and spent time with friends near Alki Beach.

I love a good sunset
Taking the ferry to the city
Museum of Pop Culture
Alki Beach at night

We then headed north to Friday Harbor.

Walking around town

Longtime readers of this blog know that I’m obsessed with Tesla. I don’t own a Tesla but have thought about buying one. I found a 2013 Model S on Turo with free supercharging that was similar in price to a conventional rental. Despite the age of the car, it’s been a great experience. The controls are intuitive and it’s incredibly fast. I’ve driven fast cars before, but this is the only one where the acceleration scares me.

We’ll head back to Seattle later in the week. Friends of ours are moving from Seattle to Longmont, so I’m going to stay back and help them drive the moving truck. I love road trips and this one should be especially good because I’ll be able to see friends in Boise and Ogden.

Perhaps the greatest reason to pursue FIRE is that it gives you autonomy over your time. I still have schedules to keep since I have children, but most of my time is free to think, read, write, create, or just randomly water around and take silly dinosaur pictures.

Life is good.

Glad that you are enjoying spring break with kids. These are the beautiful moments. Few years from now, kids will leave us to pursue their education, career. We will be remembering and cherish these memories forever.

I test drove Tesla Model S and 3 in Orange County, CA. I agree that the acceleration is instant and I was afraid to hit the pedal hard. Enjoy!

    Carl,

I am in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. I know you like craft beer. I would recommend checking out some Ballard breweries, my favorites are Stoup and Ruebens. I would even buy you a beer!

We’re hitting Good Society in Alki Beach tonight if you’re around! Not close to you, but thought I’d throw it out just in case!

We’re going on a quick Atlanta trip in August and I’d completely forgotten that Turo was a thing. Thanks for the tip! Looks like there are several BMW i8 options if we want to get ridiculous…

MoPOP was one of the highlights of our 2017 trip to Seattle. The first thing we saw when we walked in was the old Cable piano used by my wife’s favorite singer/songwriter Elliott Smith, and there happened to be a big Jim Henson exhibit that we loved. Sounds like you’re having a blast — safe travels on your road trip back home!

Oooh, driving around an i8 for a couple of days would not suck!

Seattle is pretty awesome. So is every bit of the Pacific NW that I’ve experienced. I could live there.

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
