Ask the Readers: What do you do when life kicks your ass?

April 6, 2015 by Mr. 1500 Days 81 Comments

Mr. 1500 doing all of the talking today...Lately, I've been thinking that perhaps my life isn't on quite the right path. I am perpetually tired from being perpetually busy. While I have a great life and don't really have the right to complain about anything, it can all be overwhelming at times. The problem may actually be this very blog. I'll get to that in a … [Read more...] about Ask the Readers: What do you do when life kicks your ass?

Ask the Reader: Should we rent and flip?

August 18, 2014 by Mr. 1500 Days 21 Comments

Last week, I asked you about your rules for landlording. In the past, I put a lot of emphasis on the credit report. A fellow landlord told me he thinks the rental history is just as important. Here is what you think:Mario (a seasoned landlord) from Debt Blag had this to say: ...rental history has been a better predictor of how reliable a tenant they’ll be than credit … [Read more...] about Ask the Reader: Should we rent and flip?

Ask the Reader: The Sky is Falling! Do you care?

August 4, 2014 by Mr. 1500 Days 34 Comments

Good afternoon everyone. How I learned to stop worrying and love the 4% ruleLast week, I asked if you believe in the 4% rule. I must admit to you that I had my own motivations when I asked the question. It is no exaggeration to say that I think about the 4% rule every single day (my brain is not normal). Like most of you, I was unsure of it. However, all of your great … [Read more...] about Ask the Reader: The Sky is Falling! Do you care?

Ask the Readers: Do you believe in the 4% rule?

July 28, 2014 by Mr. 1500 Days 57 Comments

Hi there, Mrs. 1500 today, tag-teaming with the Mr. to ask Do you believe in the 4% rule? But first, let's talk about last week's question and answers: How do you interact with people who are the exact opposite? When I asked this question, we had just spent a very long weekend with some family who had been in town. They like to spend money, and consider almost any … [Read more...] about Ask the Readers: Do you believe in the 4% rule?

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
