Ask The Readers: How Are You?

October 28, 2019 by Mr. 1500 Days 29 Comments

This was a busy year for Mindy and me:New house: I'm typing this article in the home we just moved into a couple of days ago. We've been casually looking at acquiring more real estate ever since we moved to Longmont and have even made some offers, but none were accepted. Until now. It turns out we needed to find a home with a feature no one else wanted:New business: … [Read more...] about Ask The Readers: How Are You?

Ask The Readers: Your Why Of FI?

September 9, 2019 by Mr. 1500 Days 30 Comments

I didn't know what early retirement was until October of 2012. I had a very bad, no good, terrible day at work and googled something like:How do I retire early?Up came Mr. Money Mustache and JD Roth, two fellows who had retired early. My first thought was this:What kind of scam have I stumbled upon? When does the sales pitch come??And then I read MMM's post on … [Read more...] about Ask The Readers: Your Why Of FI?

Giveaway! Before we get down to business, I'm having a giveaway this week. Read on...In last week's post, I included a ridiculous photo of me posing with my beloved Wahl shaver:Wahl caught wind of our fun and games. Instead of sending me a cease and desist, they sent me a shaver:How awesome is that? However, I already have two Wahl shavers, so I don't … [Read more...] about Ask The Readers: Fun Money Account?

Ask The Readers: Stepping Out Of Comfort Zones

November 12, 2018 by Mr. 1500 Days 16 Comments

I've been thinking a lot about comfort zones lately. If you never stray from them, you're not going to grow much and that's no way to go through life. But first, we must address the question from many weeks ago where I asked if financial independence could be a bad thing for your life, specifically your marriage.Marriage On FIRE Or Fire? Not having a job has allowed … [Read more...] about Ask The Readers: Stepping Out Of Comfort Zones

Ask The Reader: Favorite Quotes/Advice

August 6, 2018 by Mr. 1500 Days 35 Comments

I love a good quote. Just a few wise words can convey so much. I've included some of my favorites below and I want to hear yours too. Before we get to that, let's review last week's question. Kids And Money Last week, I asked you if you share your finances with your children. I like to be as open as possible, so I share details of our financial picture with Older Daughter. … [Read more...] about Ask The Reader: Favorite Quotes/Advice

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
