Would You Take The Warren Buffett Bet?

December 27, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 24 Comments

A couple folks asked me fun questions related to stocks and Warren Buffett recently...Question #1: Stocks? Last month, a very smart person asked me this. How do you pick stocks? The short answer is: I don't. The longer answer is: I mostly don't. It's complicated. I realize that I'm not making much sense. I'll try to explain.Individual stocks mostly scare me and … [Read more...] about Would You Take The Warren Buffett Bet?

Ask the Readers: Read anything good lately?

May 3, 2016 by Mr. 1500 Days 30 Comments

Hoooooo, weeeeeee!!! I type this from Omaha where I'm at the end of a little road trip. First, I drove from Colorado to Chicago with a pit stop in Wisconsin. I spent the week in the Windy City doing actual work (shudder). On Thursday, I jumped back in the Honda Element and headed west. I stopped here in Omaha where I met Mrs. 1500 to attend the Berkshire Hathaway annual … [Read more...] about Ask the Readers: Read anything good lately?

Buffett’s Beautiful Berky Blurbs

April 14, 2016 by Mr. 1500 Days 14 Comments

I love Warren Buffett. All of the following are true:He is worth $66 billion. In 2018, he'll be appearing in a movie; "Superman versus Buffett." Rumor has it that Charlie Munger is in negotiations to play Robin. Buffett is giving almost his entire fortune to charity upon his death. He has X-ray vision. Buffett has outperformed the markets for over 50 years. He … [Read more...] about Buffett’s Beautiful Berky Blurbs

1500 Days takes a slight diversion this week. Ask the Reader will return next week as we turn our focus to our last major home project. Munger and Buffett Before I tell you about that though, I must tell you just a bit about the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders' meeting that we got back from just hours ago.The Berkshire meeting is rightfully called the Woodstock of … [Read more...] about Berkshire, Buffett and bathroom remodeling

Performance Update 17/50: Movin’ on up in May

June 3, 2014 by Mr. 1500 Days 29 Comments

My main goal is to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 in 1500 days with no debt*, starting from 1/1/2013. Every month, I provide an update on my status. My goal for 2014 is to get my portfolio up to $768,536. Because we saw exceptional returns in 2013, I have accomplished this goal. Time to look back on the month of May.What a difference a month makes. In April, I was down … [Read more...] about Performance Update 17/50: Movin’ on up in May

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642

2022: Investments only
1/1: $4,762,642
2/1: $4,404,447
3/1: $4,214,068
4/1: $4,499,622
5/1: $4,007,476
6/1: $3,929,270

Overall
2022 investment gains: -$833,372
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $3,343,227
Net worth***: $4,159,270

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
