Midwest Roadtripping/ Questionable Swimming

July 22, 2019 by Mr. 1500 Days 9 Comments

We're currently on a road trip that will span almost a month. When this goes live, I'll be on a bike, riding the farm roads of Iowa. However, the trip started in Colorado...First, we made a stop at Camp FI Rocky Mountain:Then we went to Minnesota. I'm a Midwesterner at heart and always love my trips back to the region. After Minneapolis, we drove down the … [Read more...] about Midwest Roadtripping/ Questionable Swimming

Ask the Readers: Why FI?

October 24, 2016 by Mr. 1500 Days 57 Comments

Why FI??!!! Really Mr. 1500, what a crap title! Can't you come up with anything better? Yes, that is another horrible title. What I'm really asking is this: Why do you strive for Financial Independence? As crazy as it sounds, when I started this blog, I didn't really know what my goal was. I was running away from a stressful job, but not running toward anything except a … [Read more...] about Ask the Readers: Why FI?

Thursday Rant: Disasterous Drivers and Airbnb Adventures

October 2, 2014 by Mr. 1500 Days 20 Comments

In my real life, I work on a contract basis. I write code for a nice hourly rate and that's about it. Since I'm not an employee, I don't have to deal with stuff like reviews or silly employee surveys. I simply do my work and collect a check every week. The downside of this arrangement is that I give up some benefits. If I have to travel for work, I pay for it myself. While … [Read more...] about Thursday Rant: Disasterous Drivers and Airbnb Adventures

Hitting the Open Road, 1500 Style

February 16, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 9 Comments

Today, I leave on a trip. I'm heading to lovely (even if it is super cold) Madison, Wisconsin to visit my sister for the weekend. On Monday, I'll drive down to Chicago to test a new computer system that I designed. I'll then head down to Memphis, Tennessee to visit my other sister who is attending college there. Finally, I'll head back to Colorado. My trip got me thinking about … [Read more...] about Hitting the Open Road, 1500 Style

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
