Random Rant: Normal Sucks

May 24, 2016 by Mr. 1500 Days 121 Comments

Hate Mail!I started blogging over 3 years ago to document my journey to financial independence/early retirement. I thought it would be fun to hold myself publicly accountable and at the same time, share my adventure with others. With a strong market tailwind at my back, I accomplished my financial goal recently and ahead of my timeline.Blogging here on 1500 Days has … [Read more...] about Random Rant: Normal Sucks

Thursday Rant: I suck

February 20, 2014 by Mr. 1500 Days 34 Comments

I spend more than enough time tearing others a new one. However, I really criticize myself more than anyone else. I spend way too much time reflecting on my own faults, bad decisions and shortcomings. Time for a self-therapy session. This past fall, I was on my way back to my home state of Colorado when I decided to make a little detour in Iowa. I stopped for 2 … [Read more...] about Thursday Rant: I suck

Thursday Rant: Quick Hits, Travel Edition

October 10, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 37 Comments

I've been all serious lately, talking about Retirement gone Wrong again and again. Time to lighten things up a bit with some fun ranting! If you ever pass through the Denver Airport, keep your eyes open. I was at the airport this week and it's like a giant haunted house. First, take a look at some of the murals. They are completely creepy. I'm not sure what they're all about, … [Read more...] about Thursday Rant: Quick Hits, Travel Edition

Thursday Rant: We live in Butt Crack City

September 26, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 21 Comments

Hi there, Mrs. 1500 ranting today against a rather pervasive problem in my life right now. You may know it as Plumber's Butt if you are from the United States, Canada or Australia. You have heard it called Builder's Bum if you live in England. It is called Bouwvakkersdecolleté in The Netherlands and Maurerdekolleté in Germany. No matter the name, the cause is always the same … [Read more...] about Thursday Rant: We live in Butt Crack City

Thursday Rant: I want Smarties Cereal!

March 7, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 19 Comments

I was walking through the cereal aisle a while ago and happened to notice a box of Wheaties with Michael Phelps on the front and it got me thinking. In the US, we love our athletes. They are on all sorts of products and selling us stuff on TV. We buy expensive jerseys with their names on the back. We pay lots of money to see them perform. Kids aspire to be them. We … [Read more...] about Thursday Rant: I want Smarties Cereal!

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821
2/1: $3,582,368

Overall
2023 investment gains: $469,547
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,996,325
Net worth***: $3,812,368

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
