Your Net Worth or The Herps?

April 3, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 10 Comments

Ask the Readers takes a break this week. Instead, read the post that I wrote for Rockstar Finance.

Urban Dictionary comes through again.

Money is such a funny thing. It’s so important, yet we’re so scared to talk about it. Most guard their finances like it’s a deep, dark secret. I’m convinced that most would reveal that they have a sexually transmitted disease before their net worth.

The personal finance community is different. When I asked what your net worth was:

I received a record number of responses:

I wanted to find out why folks in the personal finance community are so open. I studied the Rockstar Finance Net Worth Tracker and emailed bloggers to find the answers. And they did not disappoint. Head over to Rockstar Finance to read their responses.

And if you have The Herps, please keep it to yourself. In every way.

You know, a lot more people have herpes these days. About 1 in 6 Americans between ages 19-49. Add in all the other forms of it (shingles!) and you get a lot more. Here’s some more fun facts on the infection! Enjoy! (http://www.webmd.com/genital-herpes/guide/what-is-it#1)

Hahahaha! To be fair, I’d want to know if someone had the herp-a-derp. I at least wouldn’t let them share a drink with me (not that I would do that anyway, but still). 😛

I always thought it was somewhat simpler. We feel like we’ve figured out something 99% of people refuse to accept and we want to teach and share because we know it’s a much better way to live. So we say, here’s my net worth(what they want), here’s how much I earn per year(less than they think), and here are my expenses and how I live. This is how I did it. Proving it most certainly can be done on a normal salary.

Mr. Tako is right though, the little bit of anonymity helps.

Thanks for letting me be a part of that ‘net worth’ post Mr. 1500! … but nobody mentioned ‘the herps’ when I signed up!

With any luck, some teen googling “herpes” (for a friend of course) will stumble upon some Financial Knowledge instead.

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821
2/1: $3,582,368
3/1: $3,716,852
4/1: $3,861,599

Gains: $748,778

Overall
Gains since 1/1/2013: $3,275,556
Net worth***: $4,091,599

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
