Ask the Readers: How did you do ~ Are you ready for Round Two?

February 3, 2014 by Mr. 1500 Days 21 Comments

Hello and good morning on this fine Monday. Mrs. 1500 today, asking how did you do on the January reader challenge, and are you ready for February’s goal of working out 24 hours in 28 days?

But first, let’s recap last week’s answers to the question “What was your college major, and do you work in your field?” Mr. 1500 and I had started to talk about all the people we know who worked in one field, but studied a completely different course in college. I was curious to see how many of you studied the field you are working in.

Jen from JenSpends has a degree in Architecture, and has used it in various ways since obtaining it. Her husband, on the other hand, has a dual degree in physics and meteorology but works in advertising! Citizenship issues limit his job choices right now, but that is still quite the divergent career path.

Mr. Maroon over at MixingMaroons studied Agricultural System Management and Engineering, and now works in Environmental Engineering, which is a related field in my opinion. His Management studies have helped him bridge the gap between engineers and non-engineers because as he puts it, “Engineers are a different kind, for sure.” Having worked with a few engineers myself, I can attest to this.

My favorite answer was from reader Julia, who “was an agricultural economics major. I worked at a farm coop for 7 years. I now create maps for the navy. It is hard explaining the transition, but it was a logical step.” I don’t get the correlation between the two jobs, but I neither create maps for the navy, nor have I ever worked for a farm coop, so maybe the two are related. I would take Julia’s word for it.

A fairly good percentage of you are working in your field of study, or one that is closely related. Emily at EvolvingPF, Allie from Allie’s Everyday Adventures, Amanda C at My Life I Guess, Jon from Our Fine Adventure, Done by Forty, and Chris over at Big Day Coming. In fact, most of you who responded are fairly close to the major, which is pretty interesting. Maybe we are just the oddballs?

On to today’s question, How did you do, and are you ready for Round Two? Previously on 1500 Days, we proposed monthly challenges for 2014. January’s challenge was to not consume alcohol. I must admit to one glass of wine about halfway through the month. We were at a friend’s house, and she was having a drink, and it just looked so good! So put me down for a fail, if you are technical, and a slipup if you are not.

Round Two is 24 hours of exercise in 28 days. We have had a bout of illness in the 1500 household, so the total tally so far is 0 hours in 2 days. I hope to be able to get to the gym today, and put in at least 1-1/2 hours, and get back on track. We shall see…

So, tell me how did you do? Are you joining us for Round Two? Good luck!

I lasted a fairly average 23 days then cracked!

You can read the reason(s) why on my challenge write up that should be linked below actually 🙂

I won’t be joining you on the 24 hours challenge… The reasons being that I am doing two half marathons in Feb and I find I need 3-4 days between long runs before my legs recover enough to do another one, so just don’t think I am going to be able to rack up enough hours. I could work on other parts of the body on the non running days I suppose but I think I am better off conserving the energy instead.

I wish you luck with your half marathons – I won’t be joining you on them! Congratulations on your 23 days of not drinking!

Yeah…I drank all month. Not daily, but I drank.

Even though I didn’t do it on purpose, I may actually be able to hit your 24 hours! According to my Fitbit, I’ve put in 3.1 hours of activity so far this month (and it’s only 9 AM on the third day!). My exercise of choice is just walking, but I do a lot of it 🙂

Well you are 3.1 ahead of me. We have been wiped out with colds, and even when I feel better, I can’t take the littlest 1500 to the gym if she is sick. I am hoping a few good hour-and-a-half days will get me caught up.

No alcohol for me… Probably not any until April, actually. And I think the 24 hour fitness is going to be pretty easy to accomplish with all the biking to/from work. My tracker app told me I logged 27.5 hrs on the bike in January, and that doesn’t count runs or hitting the gym.

Oh I envy your weather right now. We are getting the tail end of the Arctic Snap, and it started snowing this morning with the forecast calling for snow through Saturday at the earliest!

Ooh, I’ll join for round two (I think I did round one, though can’t entirely remember)! I’ve logged 3.5 so far because I did a half yesterday, so off to a good start. I hope everyone starts to feel better soon in the 1500 household!!

I didn’t even try to participate in the January challenge – I like my wine too much! But joining in on the February challenge sounds like a good idea. Hopefully it will help to burn off all those calories from the wine!

Unfortunately January was filled with lots of wine for me. The February challenge sounds pretty fun and it’s a short month! And feel better soon!

I don’t know if we’ll make it 24 total hours or not, but we can try! I’m definitely going to try to workout every day, just so I can ‘bank’ some cheat days for the future.

My day job has nothing to do with my major, but I think the blog must count as “work” so I’ll take it! I can finally tell my parents that English major wasn’t a waste!

Best of luck in February: this is an awesome monthly challenge.

I failed miserably. I was supposed to replace “alcohol” with “sugar”, and… my sweet tooth came out to bite me. I won’t even try to figure out a percentage.

For February I am going to try to do a modified version. I am having a couple minor health problems that make an hour a day a little more than I can currently handle… stupid lungs! But I will for sure make a solid attempt.

My Round 1 was to eat a consistent Paleo diet and lose 10-12 lbs in the process. Absolute failure. I was terrible plain and simple. My February goal is to walk 42 miles while walking my dog(after work only) this month, which is (28 days x 1.5 miles), which depending on the length of the walk is 30-60 minutes or 14-28 hours.

    Let’s do this!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351

1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
