How The Graying Saver Conquered Grumpiness With Gratitude

January 17, 2018 by Mr. 1500 Days 30 Comments

Today's guest post comes from The Graying Saver who discovered the FI movement in his mid-40s. Something I've always enjoyed about the FIRE community is the diversity in ages of those involved. I discovered the movement at the age of 43. Since then, I've met FIRE fanatics as young as 17 and as old as 70.Another aspect of the FIRE community that I enjoy is that we tend to be … [Read more...] about How The Graying Saver Conquered Grumpiness With Gratitude

Do You Practice Gratitude?

November 6, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 33 Comments

I've been thinking a lot about gratitude lately. Today, I'd like to know what you think.  40,000 Steps I've been walking like a maniac lately. It's part of my effort to lose weight. As long as I have the time, I walk to any destination under 3 miles. When I was in San Diego, I had two consecutive days where I walked 40,000 steps. For the past week, I've averaged … [Read more...] about Do You Practice Gratitude?

Gratitude: When Sh*t Hits the Fan Edition

August 24, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 33 Comments

The mechanical objects in my life have plotted against me. Dead Battery After we got back from vacation, I went to start-up the Honda Element and found that it was dead. Hmmm, maybe I left a door open or interior light on? I charged the battery and drove around a bit, but it was dead again the next day. To figure out what was going on, I broke out my little friend, the … [Read more...] about Gratitude: When Sh*t Hits the Fan Edition

Gratitude Found Through Perspective

August 16, 2017 by Mr. 1500 Days 38 Comments

Shannon and Sergio who write over at Screw the Average guest post today with a healthy dose of gratitude! Screw the Average is a pretty great blog name, but I like their tagline even better:be an outlier. And these two are definitely outliers. Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
