Happiness

Happiness Isn’t About Experiences Either

November 5, 2018 by Mr. 1500 Days 46 Comments

We all know that happiness isn't about stuff. Big houses and fancy cars may make you temporarily happy, but then you get used to them and all you have left is a supersized payment and more to worry about. Most of us can agree on this. Let's move on.  But Wait, What About Experiences? It has become popular to say this:It's about experiences! That is what life and … [Read more...] about Happiness Isn’t About Experiences Either

Are You Happy?

April 23, 2018 by Mr. 1500 Days 57 Comments

Note: I originally sent this content to my email list last week. I received such a positive response, I decided to publish it here. This version is slightly longer. What I write about in this post is the most important thing I learned in my journey to financial independence. Hell, it's one of the most important things I've ever learned. Only took me 4 decades! Better late … [Read more...] about Are You Happy?

Ask the Readers: Breaking the Bank for a Haircut?!?

November 28, 2016 by Mr. 1500 Days 74 Comments

Last week, I asked you about happiness. Before I get to your responses, I have a story to tell. When I was in my 20s, sometimes I did stupid things. (Didn't we all?) One fine summer day, a friend and I went for a bike ride. It was hot, so I wore nothing but shorts and shoes. Shirt? Nope. Helmet? Didn't even own one. There was a huge hill near me and per my speed demon … [Read more...] about Ask the Readers: Breaking the Bank for a Haircut?!?

Ask the Readers: What makes you Happy?

February 22, 2016 by Mr. 1500 Days 41 Comments

Last week's question had to do with a stupid picture I saw going around on Facebook:I mean, who wouldn't do this? It's a no-brainer in my book on my blog. Here is what you had to say:JC from Passive Income Pursuit: Sign me up for that challenge. Looks like you would have a kayak for exercise and exploration and could even use it as transportation to what looks like … [Read more...] about Ask the Readers: What makes you Happy?

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961

1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642

2022: Investments only
1/1: $4,762,642
2/1: $4,404,447
3/1: $4,214,068
4/1: $4,499,622
5/1: $4,007,476

Overall
2022 investment gains: -$755,166
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $3,421,433
Net worth***: $4,237,476

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
