Thursday Rant: Rocky Mountain Turd Wranglers*

April 25, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 33 Comments

Renaissance man: A person whose expertise spans a significant number of different subject areas.Hi there, Mrs. 1500 here.Longtime readers know of our disdain for our neighborhood. On top of being extremely wasteful, no one does anything for themselves. Every week, trucks drive in, pulling trailers loaded with lawn mowers, leaf blowers and all the other things you need … [Read more...] about Thursday Rant: Rocky Mountain Turd Wranglers*

Thursday Rant: The $260 Lunch Bag; Has Society gone Mad?!?

February 28, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 20 Comments

I took a miserable flight on Southwest recently. I fly all the time on SWA and have never forgotten to check in to the flight exactly 24 hours ahead of time. This time, I forgot. My cell phone was in a dead spot and I didn't get the alert. As a result, I got stuck in the dreaded middle seat between two very large and obnoxious people (do you really have to get drunk and pick … [Read more...] about Thursday Rant: The $260 Lunch Bag; Has Society gone Mad?!?

Taxing the Big Spenders – Looking at Things in a Different Way

February 19, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 5 Comments

Hi, Mrs. 1500 here.We recently took a trip by airplane, and brought all carry-on luggage as we are too frugal to pay $25 per bag, per flight. We ended up with 3 rolling suitcases, 2 personal bags, 2 car seats, a stroller and 2 blankets, all of which had to be carried through the airport and to the gate, where they took the 2 car seats and stroller off our hands, but we … [Read more...] about Taxing the Big Spenders – Looking at Things in a Different Way

Thursday Rant: No Nice Car, no Wife for You Mr. 1500!

February 7, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 8 Comments

Let's go back in time 12 years to the year 2001. I was at one of my first real jobs out of college. At work one morning, my boss announced that she had purchased a new, $40,000 german luxury car. She was clearly excited and thought that I should have one too:Boss: Mr. 1500, I LOVE my car; you should get one too! Me (trying to politely deflect): The car I have works just … [Read more...] about Thursday Rant: No Nice Car, no Wife for You Mr. 1500!

Thursday Rant: The Lottery is my Retirement Plan

January 31, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 1 Comment

I was talking to a friend recently and had a conversation which made me want to pull my hair out and scream loud profanities. We were discussing retirement and the conversation went like this:Me: You do contribute to your 401(k), right? It's important to start young. Her: I contribute some, but my retirement plan is the lottery. … [Read more...] about Thursday Rant: The Lottery is my Retirement Plan

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
