My main goal* was to build an investment and cash portfolio of $1,120,000* ($1,000,000 to retire on and $120,000 to pay off the house) in 1500 days**, starting from 1/1/2013 and ending in February of 2017. I made my goal in 2016, my 1500 Days are over, and I’ve left my job. In the interest of openness, I’ll continue to share my numbers. For now…
March Badness!
March was unkind to the old portfolio. I sound like a broken record, but the culprit is Tesla which isn’t off to a good start in 2024. It’s my biggest holding, so as Tesla goes, so does my portfolio. And to a lesser extent, the same goes for big tech. My biggest holdings are tech companies:
I’m slowly selling off these holdings and moving to index funds. But it will take a while. While Mindy is working, I’ll sell between 0 and 1% off every year. If she stops working, we’ll sell enough to fund our lives, most likely no more than 5%. So, if the portfolio appreciates anything close to what the stock market has returned historically, the bucket will keep getting fuller.
Performance
March was an oof-tastic month. In February, we started the month at $5,069,249 and ended at $4,968,683 for a loss of $100,566. They can’t all be winners:

2024 (as of 2/1/2024)
- Days elapsed: 91
- Investment gains: $5,933
Since the Start of The Experiment (1/1/2013)
- Days elapsed: 4,108
- Investment gains: $3,982,640
2024
What does the rest of year hold? I have no clue.
But I’m feeling pretty good. I feel calm and at peace with myself which is wonderful.
I’m also looking forward to summer roadtrips to the Pacific Northwest and then Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Life is good.
More 1500 Days!!!

*My goal wasn’t to have $1,120,000 at the end of 1500 days, but at any time before the day count was up. Why? It all goes back to the 4% Rule. Remember that our little friend, Mr. 4%, is nothing more than the most conservative safe withdrawal rate. Since my investment portfolio now sits at $1,550,000, I can spend about $62,000 in my first year of retirement.
**My original goal was $1,000,000 and no debt, I later raised the goal by $120,000 to $1,120,000 because I will have debt in the form of a mortgage and I firmly believe in not paying it off (LOOK at the MONEY I’m MAKING!). My compromise was to have enough money put away to cover the mortgage at the time of retirement.

That bull is in Cherry Creek! Did you see the restaurant name in the photo? 🙂
An interesting way to spend your saving ! And it wiĺ last reverae rmd 50% stocks 50 govt bonds 10 % first year ! 9.8% and continure down for ever ! But you wiĺl never run out of money if you take the highest in value like s and p unless it drops duing down years, then you take from govt bonds side instead and rebalance once a year !
