Ducks! Ducks!! Ducks!!!

May 22, 2013 by Mr. 1500 Days 22 Comments

Finally, the time has come! This week, I’ll be giving away two Warren Buffett/Charlie Munger duck sets. The first one will be given away to a lucky commenter. I have a number in my  mind. If your comment is that number, you get a set! Couldn’t be easier than that! As for the other set, scroll to the bottom for the details.

Duckie Travels

We recently completed a whirlwind of the Midwest. My younger sister graduated college and we went to Memphis to attend the ceremony. After that, we headed north to Chicago. Finally, we spent some time in Madison Wisconsin, visiting with more relatives. Warren Duck and Charlie Duck accompanied us on all of our adventures.

Warm up your vocal cords, its time to sing (to the music of Rubber Duckie):

Buffett Duckie, you’re the one,
You make investing so much fun,
Buffett Duckie, I’m awfully fond of you.

Munger Duckie, Warren’s best buddy,
Running Berkshire Hathaway, making loads of money,
Munger Duckie, I’m so proud of you.

OK, enough of that. Just be glad I didn’t actually sing.

Contest time! All you have to do is write a haiku about the ducks. Don’t remember what a haiku is from 4th grade? It’s a very simple poem consisting of 3 lines. The first is 5 syllables, the second is 7 and the third is 5. Here is a really horrible one I came up with off the top of my head:

Fifteen-hundred guy,
I really want those fine ducks,
Pick me pick me please.

One more hint: “Warren Buffett duck” and “Charlie Munger duck” are both 5 syllables.

Johnny Moneyseed will be the guest judge* and will pick a winner. You have until end of day Saturday to submit the haiku. Just leave it as a comment. Mrs. 1500 will announce the winner on Monday, 5/27. If you choose to rhyme, be careful with “duck.” This is a family blog!

Also remember that you don’t have to write a haiku. One random commenter also gets a set of ducks.

*I had asked Mr. Moneyseed if he’d be willing to be the guest judge a couple weeks ago, but at the time, I had no idea what the contest would be. I’d bet that never in his life did Mr. Moneyseed think he’d be a judge in a rubber duck haiku contest. I hope he doesn’t smack me when I meet him in person!

I so wanted the title of this post to be “Duck, Duck, Goose!” =)
And the duck road trip pictures are hilarious. They top all of the Flat Stanley pictures I’ve seen to date.

In Minnesota they say “Duck, Duck, Gray Duck” lol. I thought that was pretty funny the first time I heard it.

Kinda lame, but what do you expect from someone with a MBA instead of an English degree.

I have never been any good at writing haikus! I LOVE rubber duckies!!!! So much. I have actually have never had a rubber ducky in my life. In Mexico, tubs are not common, so what’s the point of rubber duckies? They are so cute.

    I’m glad I have two
    BRK ducks so I don’t
    have to be clever

These haikus (or is Haiku the plural, too like moose?) are amazing. Thanks for all the entries so far.

Mr. 1500 just came up with one, too:

    Duck duck duck duck duck
Duck duck duck duck duck duck duck
    Duck duck duck duck goose

Sorry no haiko or sodoku for this yahoo but here I go:

There was once a Warren the duck,
Who soon joined the Munger for luck,
    But as Moneyseed attests
    Their advice is the best
Hence my investments, do not suck!

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821
2/1: $3,582,368
3/1: $3,716,852

Overall
2023 investment gains: $604,031
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $3,130,809
Net worth***: $3,946,852

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
