The Beer Ratio
The Physician on FIRE is getting in on the running game:
My wife has been tracking her miles run since 2008. She stays in great shape. I’ve been tracking my miles run for 12 days. I’m not yet in great shape, but I’m working on it, slowly but surely.
And one of PoF’s goals is this:
- Run at least one mile per alcoholic drink consumed (defined as 12 oz. of 5% ABV or equivalent).
I love numbers and statistics. When I’m tracking any goal, if I can create a spreadsheet to track it, I immediately do so. Here is the one I created to track my running:
After learning of PoF’s beer ratio, I calculated mine. At the time, I had 46 miles and 20 beers logged for a ratio of about 2.3 : 1. Since I have a loftier goal than PoF, my miles-to-beer ratio will be higher. Also, I don’t have an operation like PoF’s to help keep my ratio down:
PoF must want me to keep my ratio closer to his though because he hooked me up with some fine beers from his area of the frozen woods:
Or maybe PoF has been paid off by Evil Twins JD and Mr. WoW (half-marathon competitors). Is PoF a saboteur conspiring with my enemies? I consulted the wisest one I know for answers; the Magic 8 Ball:
All signs point to yes.
This is getting dirty.
But who am I to talk? I recently “helped” JD by sending him my half-marathon training guide:
And some supplies to get him started:
I hope that JD has been following my rigorous training regimen.
And now I’m distracted. Back to business.
Steps
From now on, I’m also going to report my steps and overall mileage which includes walking. I have a Fitbit device which keeps track of it all. This year, I have 321,899 steps for a total of 153.1 miles:
This may seem like a lot, but it’s lower than average because it’s been cold and I haven’t been outside as much. It’s not that I don’t like being out in the cold; it’s that there is ice everywhere and I’m clumsy and uncoordinated. I fall on my ass enough without the help of freezing temperatures. I can’t risk an injury before the half-marathon
Update: Week #3
This week, I ran a 5.5 miler. Along with two other runs, my total for the week was 14.0 miles. Both are new highs for me. Running still isn’t easy. Or maybe it is and the progress is just too gradual to notice? A year ago, I couldn’t run a mile. My shortest run this week was 4 miles.

Don’t Waffle On Me
The Waffle People are coming to town next weekend and we’re going out for a run. Mr. WoW had the idea and I think he’s just trying to scope out the competition for the half-marathon.
Mr. WoW has nothing to worry about. While my endurance is improving, I’m still pretty darn slow. The other day on the track, a sloth blew past me (more on the Sloth Incident next week).
Am I allowed to use a Segway for the half?
no.
Rollerblades?
No!
Crap.

Thanks Mrs. PoP!
Mmmmmmm Voooodooo Donuts. I’d run a couple of extra miles for one of those.
My running’s coming along as well. I ran twice last week. Sat/Sun. It was warmer so pretty enjoyable. I can’t wait until I’m actually in shape.
My beer drinking has been way down. I need to up that game to keep up with you.
Way to go Jason!
“My beer drinking has been way down. I need to up that game to keep up with you.”
Mine usually isn’t that high. At the beginner of the year, I went to a bunch of social events which led me to behave badly. At home, I have a lot of willpower. Out of the home though in a fun setting, it all goes to hell! In any case, I’m hoping my run-to-beer ratio gets up to about 4 : 1 by the time of the half-marathon.
I love your training plan for JD!
Have you heard of the Sam Adams 26.2 Brew? Apparently, it was brewed to have salt content that helps runners replenish… no idea if that is complete BS but I do find it provides a great excuse to enjoy one 😉

Whoah, a beer running drink? I’ll take this over Gatorade any day of the week!
Loved the lighthearted post! I have never ran in a marathon of any kind before but perhaps one day. I still stay in pretty good shape so I’ve never had that – “OMG look at that flab, I need to workout” – attitude. I’ll be there one day though! Good luck with drinking beer, I mean exercise!

Drinking beer! Ha! I’m cutting back! Way back! This weekend, I’ll be totally dry! Seriously! Yeah right, who am I kidding?
Looking great! Keep up the good work! You can now run further than me, so that’s something 🙂

Ha ha, thanks Gwen! And I’ll be in Omaha for the 5K again. Actually, I think a bunch of us bloggers are gonna be in Omaha for Berkshire. Come on down!
Ok, so you managed to get twinkies, beer, a marathon, and statistics in one post, and it all makes sense! How do you do that?
Best of luck with the beer to running mile ratio! I will send you a beer tweet tonight thou, just a warning!

Did you see that I added the Magic 8 Ball?
Wait until next week when I talk about the Sloth Racing Team and 2 weeks when I post in Swedish!
I think you have one advantage over the wows in that you have training in higher altitude versus our sorry sea-level asses. So you just might do OK in the run with them next week!

True! I’m also used to the cold!
I’m happy to see my deliberate attempt to sabotage…er, I mean my heartfelt gift of hoppy treats made it to Longmont safe and sound. Make sure Mr. WoW gets in on that.
You kind of deserve it for sending Dongs and Hos (I like to abbreviate) to J.D.
Cheers!

OMG. This is awesome. Poor JD. I think I may have to avoid Portland cause that guy is gonna want revenge at some point.
Does running after my kids count? Great job and I will purposely not post my shameful miles to beer ratio.
It totally counts!
Hilarious. The training plan for JD is awesome. 🙂 I’ve actually never had any of those items… ever in 44 years of life. Now I feel like I’m missing out. On another note, I love exercise but HATE running. But your plan has inspired me. I don’t drink beer but will be implementing a 2 miles per gin & tonic habit starting today. I like the idea of motivation to run and less motivation to enjoy a cool, refreshing G&T. Keep up the good work!
Jennifer! The training plan for JD is scientifically proven! Seriously! I don’t know what it’s been proven to do, but it most do something!
And 44 and you’ve never eaten any of that junk? You’re missing out! Again, I’m not sure what you’re missing out on, but it’s surely something!
I think you’re going about this training all wrong Carl. You need better incentives! What if you banned yourself from drinking beer and eating twinkies and ho-hos until the half marathon was completed?
You’d be so much lighter you’d practically float to the finish line!
Haha! In all seriousness, you’re doing great with the running regimen. Very impressive numbers.

I once ran a race where someone went by wearing weird road ski thingies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roller_skiing). Maybe you can use those instead of a segway or rollerblades?

Since getting into marathons over the past few years, I have realized that there are very real parallels between running and saving for FI. Unfortunately, Muscles and aerobic capacity, like FI-sized net worth, don’t just appear overnight, but instead are built by steady and continuous work over time.
If you keep putting the effort in like you’ve been doing, then all of a sudden you’ll catch yourself running 5 miles and actually enjoying it!!! Best of luck and don’t forget to give yourself a break every-once in a while.
Thanks Eric!
The one thing I worry about is if I’ve given myself enough time. Are 3 months enough? Are 150 miles enough? I don’t know. One thing I can control is the weight loss. I know that losing 10 pounds will help me tremendously, so at least I have that.
3 months is definitely on the short side to go from zero to half-marathon hero, but it’s not impossible! Just keep the training steady and make this first race goal just to finish; you’ll enjoy it more and allow yourself a great time to beat on the next one. The energy on race day can carry you those last few miles even if your training didn’t quite make it there, but the thing you can’t overcome is injury, so make that your priority to stay healthy and consistent in training.
One mile per beer – what a fun way to motivate yourself into being more active! Sounds like a good way to motivate my brother as well 🙂

You will do fine although half marathons are tough. The last one I ran was about ten years ago at 42 and I walked quite a bit of the second half. Finished in 2:04 I only did a couple of 13 miles runs, so not enough training.
I think your best bet is to keep sending your competition the ding dongs and ho, ho’s. ha
Bob, 2:04 is pretty dang good. I’ll be jumping (limping?) for joy if I do that well.
Hey Carl – there are a lot of Mustachians in Portland, perhaps we could organize a potluck?
Totally! Let’s do it! Maybe you could help put us put it together since you’re familiar with the local scene? Let me get a hold of JD and a couple others and I’ll get back to you.
Getting back into training, Unfortunately I spent two days this week at a “team building” session at my job. Can you say complete waste of time. Yea.
So this week:
Riding: 40 miles
Running: 6.2 miles at a 10 minute mile pace
Swimming: 1000 yards
Team building! I remember those! Bleh!
You’re kicking ass with the workouts! Nice!!
Now that you have a nice base, trail running is where it’s at! And there happens to be a great 10k at Eldora oh 7/28. I’ll be there running and tailgating. Keep on signing up for those races! https://www.racedirectorsolutions.com/LandingPage@2890/EldoraTrail10K/Home
