Meetups In Omaha This Saturday!

May 2, 2019 by Mr. 1500 Days 9 Comments

This weekend is the Berkshire Hathaway meeting in Omaha. I’m in town with Mindy:

The girls:

And the dinosaurs:

Dinosaurs love Berkshire

Also in town is Grant from Millennial Money, Cody from Fly to FI, the Frugal Professor, and last, but never least, the Waffle Couple.

Party Time, FIRE Style

There are three, fun parties going on this weekend.

1. Shareholder Meeting

The Berkshire Hathaway meeting may be the ultimate financial meetup:

Where else can you hang out with thousands of millionaires and at least a couple of billionaires? This is the FIRE crowd, OG style.

I love attending the meeting. The energy is intense; like a big rock concert. Buffett’s words are inspirational. And then there is Charlie…

Charlie Munger is the unsung hero of Berkshire Hathaway. Buffett even called him the “architect of the current Berkshire” in one of the shareholder letters a couple of years ago. He’s a polymath and I devour everything that comes out of his mouth (uggh, that doesn’t sound right). In any case, I was standing around the Berkshire exhibition hall a couple of years ago when a golf cart pulled up next to me. In the passenger seat was Charlie! I nearly crapped myself. I was WAAAAAY too intimidated to talk to him, but I did manage to take one very poor picture of him standing in the elevator:

I have two extra passes in case anyone would like to attend. It’s all day on Saturday. Leave a comment or shoot me a note via the contact form if you’d like my extra passes

  • Place: CHI Health Center Omaha
  • Time: Saturday, May 4: Early! We usually line up around 6 am to get a good seat.

2. Omaha Mustachians

The Omaha Mustachians are hosting a meetup at Blatt Beer after the Berkshire meeting:

  • Place: Blatt Beer
  • Time: Saturday, May 4: 3:45pm
  • More information on MMM forums: https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/brk-omaha-meetup-05042019/
Frugalsaurus and Spendosaurus love attending the Mustachian Meetup

3. Real Estate Networking

There is a real estate meetup too:

  • Place: Paddy McGown’s Pub
  • Time: Saturday, May 4: 6:00pm
  • More information on BiggerPockets: https://www.biggerpockets.com/forums/521/topics/703059-berkshire-weekend-networking-saturday-evening-6pm

Can’t believe we are going to miss the girls’ first annual meeting! Hope you all have tons of fun – anyone running the 5K on Sunday?

It will NOT be the same without the PoPs!

Claire and I are running the 5K! And in related news, I’m down to 155, a two-decade weight low. I hope that this allows me to beat my time of 29:59 last year when I weighed 164.

Have fun! It’s a shame Berkshire Hathaway stock has under-performed lately. He’s done so much for the investing world, he kinda deserves to go out on a high note.

Yep. I’ve had a bunch and it’s been a dud. Some argue that it’s undervalued. That stuff is above my pay grade.

Sorry I couldn’t be there this year. Have a beer for me. Hope to see you all there next year.

    Cheers!

The reason to own Berkshire hathaway stock. For admittance to the annual meeting. That and the discount in geico insurance (IS that a real thing?). I read the huge Warren Buffet biography, and it inclured some biography about Charlie Munger. BOTH were characters in their youth. Though they probadly still are. . If you haven’t read it, it’s fascinating and some of the pranks Warren Buffet did as a kid….wow. “Snow ball effect”.

Freedom!

My goal was to build a portfolio of $1,000,000 by February of 2017; 1500 days from the birth of this blog (January 1, 2013). And hey look, I’ve since retired!

Investments only (primary home excluded)
1/1/13 (The Start): $586,043
1/1/14 (1 Yr Later): $869,635
1/1/15 (2 Yrs Later): $987,351
1/1/16 (3 Yrs Later): $1,057,961
1/1/17 (4 Yrs Later): $1,257,128
1/1/18 (5 Yrs Later): $1,527,701
1/1/19 (6 Yrs Later): $1,549,440
1/1/20 (7 Yrs Later): $2,035,040*
1/1/21 (8 Yrs Later): $3,379,746**
1/1/22 (9 Yrs Later): $4,762,642
1/1/23 (10 Yrs Later): $3,112,821

2023: Investments only
1/1: $3,112,821

Overall
2023 investment gains: $0
Investment gains since 1/1/2013: $2,526,778
Net worth***: $3,342,821

* The big jump between 2019 and 2020 was partly because we bought another home, but kept the previous (much more expensive) one as a rental. We have since sold it.

** Tesla.

*** Includes our primary home equity in addition to our investment portfolio.

Finally, we still have about $290,000 in mortgage debt (which I love!). No regrets about the debts!
